In the summer of 2012, we flew across Canada for our oldest son's wedding and while doing some sight seeing, I hit as many fabric stores as I could. In one store I found 6 bolts of fabric with the same pattern but all different colors. I purchased a half meter of each one and decided I would find a project to use them all in. I had a number of ideas over the following months but nothing that really struck my fancy. Then my mom purchased a book for me called Circle Quilts by Colleen Granger. As soon as I got it in the mail I started flipping through it and came to this pattern and I knew this was it! This was where I would use my fabric!!
This pattern needed 9 colors and so I went through my stash to look for 3 others to add to the ones I already had set aside. Amazingly, I had 2 more that would work so I only needed to buy 1 plus the black.
I've never worked in the round before and had no idea how to do it but this book had very clear instructions. It's paper pieced and while I didn't follow Colleen's paper piece method, my own way worked just as well. Each ring is broken up into sections and once each section is finished, you combine them to make a ring. Starting with the center, you join each ring to the next larger one by using a small zigzag stitch and invisible thread. Here's a picture that shows the first few rings:
The circle is 30.5" in diameter.
Not sure if I'll attempt another one of these but I'm extremely happy I made this one!
