My dog also loves to chew.  I found that just plain old ice cubes keep her entertained.  I put a few in a bowl and she's happy for a few minutes at least.  I also bought one of the super big knots you find at the pet store by the ropes.  My dog chews through ropes pretty fast and always has the knots left over so I started getting just the knots.

measurements will really make a difference if you can get them.  I have a 20 lb. fox terrier/beagle mix and i buy and make mediums for her.

Yeah, all you need is a cheap machine and just a standard sewing needle will work.  I've only crocheted dog sweaters so using baby clothes is a new venture for me too!
