11  FIBER ARTS / Felting: Completed Projects / baby dreads hat on: December 30, 2006 07:05:03 PM
I finally finished the hat for my nephew. It has blue, black, grey and white dreads of various types sewn onto a dark heather grey (purchased) hat. The whole family loved it! Even Parker (the baby didn't mind wearing it:)
here's lots of pics including his daddy's real dreads, and my quazi fall (first I ever made and I still don't know how to attack it to a band well enough to cover my tail!)

12  FIBER ARTS / Felting: Discussion and Questions / my sheep arrived! :) on: December 28, 2006 06:20:58 PM
I just got my order from Sheep Shed Studios today! I'm more giddy than I was on Christmas!! Smiley The fibers and great, and I totally understand why some on the spinning board 'felt' (he he) the urge to make out with their newest batch of fiber! The bell is enoumous and I have made everyone of my boys feel how soft and cozy it is! I just wanted to share my joy... now I'm off to figure out how to attach short little dreads to a baby hat for my 1st nephew who I'll meet on the 30th! Smiley Wish me luck.. I'd be open to any suggestions! So far I think I'll try to cut them in half (they're DE) and sew them like they're growing out if it like they would be on your head. If that fails I have some matching wool yarn and I'll crochet a super simple headband or beenie to hide the sewing, and use the purchased hat as a lining to protect his presious skin.
Happy Felting to all
and to all a good night Smiley

The only thread I found was ancient! Anyone still around from my area?  My 1st ? is... is there ANYWHERE within and hour of me to buy wool roving (or to learn to spin)? I have started felting and have to order everything online.
Thanks! Smiley
14  FIBER ARTS / Felting: Completed Projects / bet ya thought I was kidding about felting OBSESSION!!! on: December 04, 2006 06:44:15 PM
Grin Another new project (that's about 10 total, including those too messed up to post, in less than a week!!!)

I think the aspect I love most is how each piece has a life of its own and lets you know what it's supposed to be. (not to mention that my hubby is totally impressed, and says "this one is really art, not like the other crazy stuff you like to make Shocked)
This was going to be a hot pad, but it didn't shrink down enough, so it became a base for an attempt at felt along #3/4.

The colors are a bit richer than the pic shows, but I'm fairly pleased with it.  It was fun, and it's first thing I've made that's closer to artistic than autistic!  Roll Eyes

Now I have plenty of little things to give random relatives, but my house is a mess and I got nothing done over our 4 day weekend! (the winter storm in St Louis knocked out power to half our school)

Thanks all for your support and advise (and of course the GREAT TUTS!!!) Though I'm sure my "crackster babies" would rather I hadn't discovered this particular board!! : Tongue
15  FIBER ARTS / Felting: Completed Projects / First attempts at needle felting on: December 03, 2006 09:41:22 AM
After a not so sucessful try at wet felting I thought I'd give the needles a try before I chucked the newest obsession to strike courtesy of crafter ADD. I"M SOOOOOOO glad I did!!! You have created another adict! The pieces are no where near as good as the beauty you all have posted, but if you have any tips or ideas I'd be gratful!! Smiley

The ball from the tutorials was going to be a snowman, but his eyes reminded me of Jack Skellington (who my hubby thinks is the coolest) so I stiched on his mouth (i'm not good enough to felt something that tiny yet!) and threw it at him while he was on "crack" (everquest) He was so impressed he actually logged off!!!!! Smiley

The next attempt was the bug from felt along #2.  I followed the tut loosely and decided he should be a needle holder.  I'm obsessed with color coding, and tied yarn on to my needles to identify size, so I made matching spots for them to go into, now I can see right away what's missing! Smiley

Finally I went back to the snowman idea for gift exchange...

16  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Get Product and Website Opinions / opinion on products please on: September 25, 2006 07:46:49 PM
I have materials (or at least have ordered them) to make someting simmilar to "jibbitz" (the little charm/decorations that you put in the holes of Crocs or HoleySoles).
Do you think they would sell? I'm obsessed, but I can't find many people selling them (only 3 on ebay I think) They consist of cool buttons and a special cap plug. HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Thanks So Much in Advance for your help and ideas!!!!

17  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Advice please! on: June 09, 2006 03:23:35 PM
I'm crocheting over flip flops for a good friend for her wedding (in less than a month no less) I know she's gonna give them to her maids as "thank you" gifts and she wants them to wear them at the reception (so they don't kill their feet). I'm also doing a pair for her.  Another of her friends has asked me to do some for her wedding too, so yeah!
???My question is ... Should I not charge her (she expects to pay $5-8 per pair for the materials, and I have seen similar things around here NOT custom for over $20 ) and make that her "gift"? I thought about making tiny ones out of foam sheets and putting them in her card so that when she opens it 12 black and 2 white flip flops fall out at her.  We're REALLY broke at the moment and I Have NO idea what else she needs. They've been living together for over a year and at the shower all of her finance's family got her TONS of EXPENSIVE stuff from the registry and her family and friends got her most of the little stuff they wanted.
My other question is then... what do I charge her friend or tell her? I sell some with my step mom and they're $10-12 at a craft fair, I was just charging my friend for materials. Should I charge a bit for labor? I hate all this! I wish I just had the $$$$$ to buy the materials and give them away!!  Cry
Thanks in advance!! Smiley
