1  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Hired to x-stitch: must give quote on: August 01, 2011 07:49:50 PM
Hello beloved craftsters!

I've agreed to make 3 simple x-stitchings for a friend to use in a movie he's making. It's pretty cool; they will actually be quite important to the plot!

They will be lettering: one is a long sentence (20 wds), the second is 9 words and the third is just one single word (I won't share what they are without his permission). I told him I would need to see the patterns/designs before I could give a very accurate quote, but he needs the quote first to see if the movie can even afford custom handmade x-stitchings.

This quote must cover materials as well as my labor. Could any of you experienced stitchers help me ballpark this?

Thanks in advance!
2  CROCHET / Projects from The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller / Re: Bat curtain - filet crochet on: July 22, 2010 09:05:29 AM
Oh heck... tough to say! I believe I completed it start to finish within 2 months, working on it for an hour or so while watching Carnivale on DVD. It was my firest filet crochet attempt though, so I definately made mistakes and frogged several sections that didn't look right.

It was a very satisfying project, though!

5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / "Bounce" hat question on: August 31, 2009 08:51:11 AM
Hey all,

Has anyone made this slouchy knit hat?

http://yarnballboogie.com/patterns/Bounce.pdf

I'm trying to make one but I'm having trouble.
The instructions say to work as "k1, k1 into row below, k1, repeat to end"

Judging by the picture, I'd say this was to produce a ribbed effect without purls, but all I'm doing is knitting a piece that never grows length! Do you suppose there's an error in the pattern? Perhaps you only do the (k1 into row below) every other row?

Wow!! Thanks everyone!

tamirive & holytararor: filet crochet was pretty tricky to get the hang of. I found Debbie Stoller's analogy of windows very useful; there's a dc for each window frame, and then 2 stitches between them that are either "open" (2 ch), or "shut" (2 dc). Feel free to PM if you have questions or want further explanation. Once you get the hang of it, it's very satisfying.

solitaire: Thank you! The pattern is from the "Stitch n Bitch Crochet: the Happy Hooker" by Debbie Stoller. It's actually not a curtain pattern, just a bat chart she uses to introduce filet crochet as a technique. There are many other charts and patterns for filet crochet online. Try it!

Hi!

I made this curtain for my bedroom window from the pattern used to teach filet crochet. It's perfect for this window, which doesn't get very much sunlight through it to begin with.

I love it; mirror especially!

May I ask how you mounted the canopy?
