**If you don't feel like reading my loooong story... just scroll down and look at my lame cake... hehe.
Ok... so I LOVE Ace of Cakes and any other cake decorating show on tv. Lately I've been hooked on that Amazing Wedding Cakes one on the WE channel. I also read this board daily and admire all of the awesome cakes you all have made wishing that I could do the same.
So today I was finally motivated to give it a shot! I went to Michael's and Wal-Mart and picked up everything I'd need. I just went with boxed cake mix and the canned frosting because I was just going to focus on the decorating portion this time. I figured I'd give the whole "bake a cake from scratch" thing a go the next time around.
I got yellow cake mix and buttercream frosting. I have no clue if that's a good combination or not... it's just what I decided to get as I was standing in the cake aisle. I also picked up the marshmallows, food coloring, and powdered sugar for the fondant.
I decided I was going to make a robot cake because I freakin' love robots!
I got home and worked on the fondant. I don't have an apron... because... well... I don't ever cook or bake! So needless to say, I got powdered sugar all over me. I wanted light gray fondant.... so I figured I'd add a tiny bit of black food coloring. Well... I got DARK PURPLE! AAHHH!
I didn't want a purple robot! That's just not cool! But eh... I figured it would have to do. I also mixed some red, blue, and green fondant... but the green was too sticky and had to be tossed in the trash.
Then I put it all in the fridge.
A few hours later... I mixed the cake mix and baked two cakes. I added red food coloring to make the cakes pink... but they're actually more orange.
I trimmed them after they cooled, and stacked them. Then I cut them into the "robot peices".... ya know... the head, body, arms, and legs. Yeah.
Then I got out the icing and started to frost them. This is when I realized that this was not going to go like I had planned. The cake basically disentigrated when I added the frosting! AAHHHHHH!
So eh... they looked horrible, but the fondant would hide that.
Then I brought out the fondant. I started to roll it out... which sucked because my roller was too small but I was cheap and wouldn't get the bigger one. Also, I had barely any table space because I was lazy and didn't want to clean.
I knew the fondant was too thick, but I was lacking patience at this point in time to I layed it on to the cake. I smoothed it out as best I could... and trimmed the edges. After I added it to the head and body, I realized I only had enough for one arm! Well... a robot would look silly with one arm, so I just let my Mom have that peice. =/
So now I had a robot head and a robot body... and that's all! Darn it! So I rolled out the red and blue fondant and cut out the eyes, mouth, and heart. It was too thick... but I didn't care because really... I just wanted to finish the damn thing so I could use the computer!
So... now I present to you... the dark purple, legless, armless, and lumpy robot cake.
I surrounded him with pink icing to cover up the horrible trimming job I did with my pizza cutter... hehe.
Look at how thick the eyes and mouth are!
And the inside of the cake:
My Mom said the fondant is gross and chewy. It also turns your mouth dark purple! Hehe.
So eh... I guess it was only my first try and practice makes perfect. I know it would have been better if I had a little patience... but I'm horrible when it comes to that.
