11  Texas / Texas: Coastal / fabric in H town? on: September 26, 2006 08:41:17 PM
Back home in Jersey, I knew all the good independent fabric stores. Here in Houston, I haven't really explored enough to find good fabric stores - what do y'all suggest? I live in Katy - I work in the Heights - and travel frequently to north parts of town for the boy's family functions.

Thank you!
12  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / advice on substitutions for a pattern needed please! on: September 08, 2006 07:24:38 AM
Got the newsletter email from Berroco this morning and I'm absolutely in lust with this sweater - http://www.berroco.com/exclusives/lys/lys.html

I'm probably an advanced beginner knitter. I've read through the pattern and it doesn't look like there's anything it it that would be too hard for me.

The problem is getting all the yarn! And preferably a little more cheaply than Berroco prices. Tongue I know I can sub lion-brand suede for the berroco suede. I am prepared that I'll probably have to get the bling-bling in Berroco. Any suggestions on the hip-hip or softwist?

thanks!! Smiley
13  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / 7 Skeins of Cascade's Venezia - What to Knit? on: September 01, 2006 06:52:48 PM
Last year in like February/March, I joined the lovely BF on a work trip to Louisiana. While he worked on satellite modems, I ventured out and found a cute little YS and fell madly in love with Cascade's Venezia in color 122 (bubblegum!) http://www.cascadeyarns.com/cascade-Venezia.asp

But at like $16 a skein, I only got one.

Fast forward to like April. Both skeins are still there, having had nothing more done to them but fondling and lovingly petting. Then I found a lot of 6 more skeins on Ebay for $40. I bought it.

In June I started the anthropologie capelet. Now it's September, I haven't even finished all the raglan increases. I haven't touched it in months.

I LOVE the yarn, I am just "ehhh" about making a capelet out of it. I don't really know why, I know it would look super cute. I just don't know that it would look super cute *on me*.

The first capelet I made was a mess. I knit it to wear over my dress at prom since I didn't figure a chaperone should have bare shoulders. I didn't like it but I was out of options to make or buy another one at the last minute. Fortunately the lighting was dark... It was so bad I won't even post pictures on here. So I think I may just be gun shy of the pattern now.

So my poor lovely yarn has been sitting... and sitting... and sitting... waiting on me to figure out what to make of it.

Cascade has a pattern for a cardigan but I dunno if it really does the yarn justice. Or maybe it's because their picture is weird and blurry.

I was thinking maybe a circle shrug.

What do y'all think? I'm a curvy girl with ample endowments in the boobal area. I'm not the most proficient knitter (haven't figure out cables but I can follow patterns, knit in the round, etc...)

Any suggestions?

15  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / San Antonio Missions- 4 pictures on: June 27, 2006 09:45:03 PM
Now, I'm by no means a photographer - no training and just a basic point and shoot digital with a little zoom - but some of these turned out really neat. They're from the missions of San Jose and San Concepcion in San Antonio, Texas.

Please forgive any blurriness! Smiley

16  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Vintage Kits - want some? on: June 18, 2006 08:50:46 AM
My mom sent me a box of vintage embroidery, cross stitch, plastic canvas, and felt kits. I'm absolutely swimming in projects right now and really shouldn't keep them sitting in the box, never to be finished! She found them at a yard sale, so I have no idea where they originally came from. Some of them are opened and have a little work done, others are sealed. Some could use a good airing out because theyhave a slight funky been in the closet for years smell, which should be no problem to get rid of - it just needs air.

Pictures and complete descriptions for all of them are on my multiply because I didn't want to post all the pics here and load down the bandwidth. Smiley http://mserocks304.multiply.com/photos/album/9

If you're interested, let's talk about a trade- either message me here or on my multiply! Smiley
17  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Strawberry Shortcake Bag on: June 03, 2006 09:02:19 AM
This was an accidentally on purpose kind of project. No pattern, just kinda winged it. It's too small for my kind of purse, but just right for my friend Kat. When considering the colors, it reminded me a lot of Strawberry Shortcake - and then I found some awesome Strawberry Shortcake fabric to line it with. Covered the magnetic snap with a felt strawberry! Here it is, being modeled by my baby, Daisy, who should be the first doggy saint for her patience!

And here's one of her wearing the bag as a hat because I couldn't resist tormenting her whilst she tried to nap. (Yes, I know her nails are grotesquely long. The only one she'll let cut her nails is my boyfriend - and then she'll only tolerate him doing one at a time. The dog is neurotic and terrified of clippers for no apparent reason!)

18  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / really UGLY pants to really CUTE bag (moderately img heavy) on: May 30, 2006 06:27:14 PM
So my mom is cleaning out her closets and decided to send me a box of stuff. Some of it was pretty cute and some of it was ... well... heinously ugly. Take for instance, these horrifying pants. Now, she says she bought them to take on vacation, but as you can tell from the tags- thank heavens she never actually wore them. Women in my family are rather well endowed in the buttock-al region and these pants would have been god awful.

But the fabric was good and I've really wanted to make one of the shopping totes like dyabolica's tutorial and hdoglovesyou's wallet (from the main list). So about an hour or so of cutting and under an hour of sewing, I ended up with these!!! The lining is from a thin cotton peasant shirt she also sent - but I forgot to take a picture of it.

Bag, wallet, and Ipod sleeve!

Plus I have enough left over to make a zippered pouch, once I get a zipper. Smiley
19  COOKING / Dessert / It's (soon to be) raining figs! on: May 23, 2006 06:11:24 AM
So - we bought a house and there's a tree in the backyard that I didn't pay much attention to when we first moved in. Couple of days ago, I happened to be outside and looked up at the tree and noticed there was stuff growing on it. Turns out - it's a fig tree. I've never seen a fig tree this big! (Almost taller than our one story house.) And it has a TON of figs growing.

None of them are ripe yet - so I'm not sure how they'll turn out - but in preparation for the buckets of figs - what are some good recipes or things I can do with them - other than making jam!?!?!
20  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Potty Pass on: April 30, 2006 08:31:33 AM
So, I teach high school. And its spring which means everyone's bladders have shrunk so there is a constant run on the pass and then everyone wants to take the scenic route to get back to my class. This annoys me. So I needed a pass that would deter them from going and would be easy for me to keep track of.

This is what I came up with -

toilet seat from walmart - $4
hot pink spray paint - $2
sharpies I had laying around - $0
having the coolest pass in school - priceless.

Now, it's totally backfired on me. Kids were FIGHTING over who got to take it first. They wear it around their neck!
