761  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Completed Projects / Mel the mutant turtle on: December 29, 2005 09:12:06 PM
I got it in my head to try crocheting a turtle, though I don't know why, I'm not that into turtles.

Mel is a mutant because she has a pink shell and two tails. The pictures don't show it too well, but she has a sad look on her face. Her head is somewhat outsized (and how), but I decided with was appropriate in the end. Mel was made without a pattern, as is obvious.

I was thinking of doing something more extreme with her, but I don't want to let personal ambition outpace my abilities. This is only my second crochet animal. She's far from perfect, but as a paperweight (stuffed with polyfill and aquarium gravel), she functions fine. And maybe she'll cheer up with a purpose in life.

Ahem.

She looks great and I love the proportions.

Thanks! I was at a quiet bar last night and actually sketching ideas. I'm so lame...!  Roll Eyes

I love these, I was actually thinking of making some... but you beat me to it. I could never work out how to make the broccoli, though. Now I'm even more motivated to try my hand at it.

And I reckon you could sell each item for at least US$20, with maybe a $5-$10 discount if someone buys the lot.

Nigel is stuffed with polyfill and a wee bag of aquarium gravel to give him some heft.

... hmmm... he'd make a good stressball, come to think. He's the right size.

One of my friends just called me Grandma because he came to meet me at the coffee shop and I was crocheting. He meant it in a nice way, though, he likes my craft projects and just likes to wind people up. I can't really be bothered about what other people think, I'm enjoying myself.

Having decided to look at pictures of penguins _after_ I made Nigel (I really think ahead), I now see that he's a little... inaccurate. Hmmm. Ah well. I think I'll make him a friend.

Thanks! It's validating to have people -- other than your boyfriend (who has to) -- say he looks good.

I'm not sure if this counts as amigurumi, but it's an animal, and was mainly crocheted in circles.

His name is Nigel, and he's my first amigurumi project. I am really bad at following other people's patterns (I have the attention span of a puppy), so I made up my own, i.e. wrote things down as I did them. He is not totally even, but I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.
770  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: When did you learn to crochet? on: December 21, 2005 01:59:26 AM
I was about 9 when i first picked it up. I think I got really good at making chains (funny that) and could single crochet and then lost interest. I completely forgot about the craft. I've been looking enviously at the great amigurumi on Etsy, and I finally decided, last week, to buy a crochet needle and try again. I can still only do chains and single crochet!
