1  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Danish cookie tins on: April 18, 2010 03:52:26 PM
Ever get that huuuge tin of Danish cookies that never end? I did, but the tin remains. I'd like to use it for storage but I'm not quite sure the best way to decorate.

Does paint work? Decoupage?

How do I make the tin look like an expensive storage piece?

Thanks!

These are amazing! I love when people redo and customize items, especially like these. Beautiful!

Great work!

My mom used to make one every year at Christmastime....she started basic, then as she grew more confident ended up with 3 story Victorians.  The week of New Years my whole girl scout troop would come over and we would pick on it and eat it...you are right, not so tasty.  But, fun for kids.

Edible art rules ! Cheesy

You CAN make edible versions, I do believe! Just that any type of culinary showpiece probably won't be edible. x)

Ironically, a lot of food art isn't- like we also made things out of tallow, which is wax made out of...beef fat or something. We did some weird things in culinary school. x)

That looks amazing!

Thank you so much! x) We were all pretty pleased with ourselves.

I don't think even coffee would break it down. XD

Thanks so much!!!

Thanks for the comments, everyone! We didn't measure it but it is lifesize- five of us couldn't move it, we needed ice shears (or something like that, they're like a big pair of scissors made for lifting blocks of ice. XD)

Wow, that is one amazing gingerbread house! I couldn't take a bite from it, I would feel as if I am destroying something valuable. Cheesy

Thanks! Actually, most gingerbread house showpieces are made to not be eaten- a lot of culinary showpieces really can't be. The gingerbread is hard as a rock, and the royal icing firms up like concrete and is made with raw egg! :3

Thank you!

My last class in culinary school was Culinary Showpieces, which is just what the name suggests. Smiley We had to do gingerbread houses, which was such a fun winter project!

I did this with four other people in my group. Smiley Details include:

-Royal icing EVERYWHERE
-Colored sugar windows (I forget how we did that)
-An ice-cream cone tree
-Meringue smoke for the chimney
-Powdered sugar/royal icing snow

'Twas a labor of love and got us an A. Smiley
