I find everyone here to be incredibly knowledgable, so, maybe you can help me make my first sewing machine purchase.
I would like to buy a machine for basic sewing needs but it must be, preferably, able to sew through denim. Basically, I would like to make some clothes for myself-- nothing fancy. I am hesitant to buy a new model of Singer or Brother because from what I've read, they are built cheaply and don't last. Many say that I am better off buying a working Singer or another brand that was made before the 1970s since that's about when they stopped making quality machines. However, I am completely lost as to what models are the best for my needs and whether I really do need an old model for denim. I do not want to pay more than $150. I've seen a lot of cheap sewing machines on craigslist.org, so perhaps what would be even more helpful is if you tell me what features I need to look for and what questions are important to ask.
PLEASE HELP! Oh, and if you want to sell yours, I'd love to know more. I'm in the Dallas, TX area.
