I'm feeling pretty bad for my mom right now. I've come home with a few lucky thrift store finds that made her happy, but one had a bleach stain she can't wear to work, and yet another is a shirt that fits her now but won't fit her soon (she's five months) but she can't fit into her pants to wear with the shirt anyway!
She's tried the VERY EXPENSIVE (in my opinion, at least) mall stores for work clothes, but most things she says are leaning more towards being hip, and less towards comfort. if there is anything comfortable in her size (20) it's those shirts that say "Got Baby" and other assorted things she can't wear to work. another thing is that we live in deep south texas and it is getting VERY HOT. I showed her I could attempt belly jeans, because BOY are her pants bothering her right now, but she says even if that does work out it's a little too hot, and she would prefer some little dresses for work and shorts for around the house. (skirts with the baggy shirts really DO NOT flatter, make her look like a big poof rather than a curvy woman with a baby in her tummy) I just really can't imagine the discomfort of having to sort through the plus sizes in the thrift store for fabrics/cuts that will allow for a baby to be sticking out, since the maternity section doesn't really carry anything near her size. we've also tried several cheaper stores:mervyn's, target, wal-mart, and k-mart. she also gave lane bryant a call the other day, but they didn't have anything simple/cheap/not too warm yet, since the spring things are barely coming in.
sorry for this rant. two very important things to keep in mind are 1) we are very short on cash right now. we've bought some fabric and it all really adds up considering we don't really know what we're doing 2) and well yeah I basically just stated I'M A NOVICE SEWER. the only thing I've sewn is a wallet, although I would say I sewed it pretty well. but I am MORE THAN WILLING to practice and attempt to make her anything. we've called a seamstress and we're going to ask her to make a couple of things($$$), but here's my question: do you have any tips or tricks or simple little items for comfort around the house, as even nightgowns are no longer comfortable because it's getting hot and we don't have a/c in every room, or even just a jumper for work? I know she can get some of those tshirts but high collars bother her. and yeah she can cut them but the pants are bothering her, too haha. I WILL attempt belly jeans tomorrow though, although definitely not on jeans but on light pants. I'm a little scared of screwing up the fabric /:
BASICALLY, from your experience, what worked best for you, what should I attempt considering my skill level and lack of funds (so lack of oppurtunities for failure)? we don't care about style, only about simplicity and comfort! actually she really prefers simple clothing to what's in style now, but, oh god how I wish I could sew her some of the clothes lucille ball wore in I Love Lucy ):
thank you SO much! letting this out ALONE was a relief. oh and if you want more info: I'm a college student staying home here to help my mom out, she's 42, a hardworking middle school counselor, and pregnant whoo, go mom!
