11  HOME SWEET HOME / Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects / Pet bowl for my cat on: June 24, 2007 03:30:39 PM
So I'm experimenting with Pebeo Porcelaine paints, and I took a break from mug painting to work on a food bowl for my cat Obi.  I bought a bowl from the local Goodwill for $1.00 and I repainted his name and the little fishbone.  It didn't take very long, and I love the results.  Hopefully my kitty will like the new bowl too.

14  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Spiniach Rice Casserole on: November 25, 2006 07:22:10 PM
I'll second the suggestion for AllRecipes.  I found this great vegan split pea soup there: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Vegan-Split-Pea-Soup-I/Detail.aspx.  Try searching vegan - a lot of people put that in their recipe header.

This Spinach-Rice Casserole is really good.  I found it in some old veggie cookbook, and I've been using it for awhile now.  There's a little bit of cheese in this recipe, but you could probably reduce it or omit it.

1 Small onion chopped (1/2 cup)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 TB oil
1 14 1/2 oz can italian style chpped tomatoes
1 tsp oregano or basil
8 oz tofu, drained
2 cps cooked brown rice
1 10 oz package of frozen chopped spinach
1/2 cp of shredded swiss cheese
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 TB sesame seed

Cook onion and garlic in oil.  Add undrained tomatoes and oregano, simmer about 3 minutes.

Blend tofu and then add to tomato mixture.  Add cooked rice, spinach, and half of swiss cheese, salt, and pepper.  Grease 2-quart rectangular dish, and add mixture.  Bake uncovered in a 350 degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes or till heated through.  Sprinkle with remaining cheese and sesame seeds.

Its also low in calories and fat, and is really yummy.
15  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: Why are you Vegetarian/Vegan? on: November 25, 2006 06:57:54 PM
I'm probably in the minority here because I've only been a vegetarian since May.  I've always enjoyed vegetarian food, and I love veggies and cooking.  I'd considered going veg for a long time, but finally made the decision after reading Fast Food Nation.

My decision is based less on animal cruelty and more on health reasons.  The book reinforces the additives and hormones that are added to commerical products, and the unsafe ways food are handled and shipped.  It made me think a lot more about eating local foods, and it put me off beef, pork, chicken, and turkey.  I still eat fish, and I'll also occaisionally eat venison and lamb depending on where it comes from.  We also get our eggs and dairy from local farmers which helps me feel better about consuming those.

I've tried a raw diet, and I found that pretty difficult.  I've had a lot more luck doing a straight vegetarianism, but I'd like to add some more changes to my diet eventually.

This is a great new board!
