On all of these I just used semi-gloss house paint.  If you paint it on the raw canvas watered down it gives you that mottled look.  Then I use the end of a paint brush dipped in the paint and splatter away!  The key to good thin string splatters is semi-gloss paint, it seems to have just the right viscosity.  My sewing is improving so hopefully the next one will be even better.
