241  CLOTHING / Shoes: Discussion and Questions / Re: What ot do with Big, black boots on: December 10, 2005 12:40:41 AM
I've had the same problem, in fact I traded half a bottle of whiskey for my old dr. martens, and that's simply not the life i lead anymore.

However, I wouldn't trade them for the world, think of all the places those shoes have been! And so many more placces they will go!
To further sing the praises of good ol' docs:  I was told "now you bring some sensible footwear" when on my way to Italy a few years ago. We only went for a few days, and EVERYONE brought white, expensive, name-brand walking sneakers (which is the numero Uno sign that says 'you are a tourist, you have money' to any ne'r-do-wells) and I brought my docs and some pairs of thick socks. At the end of every rainy night my co-vacationers had sopping wet feet and most of them started getting colds, while I had water halfway up my jeans and was completely oblivious with comfy, toasty toes.

Maybe you don't need to change your shoes as much as your view of them. I see my docs as ice and snow lifesavers. I'm not the most graceful lady but the tread on the bottom plus the gauntlet of leather around your leg (paired with some tall socks) makes your feet impervious to wet and cold. Now if you have good gloves and a good hat, you've won the battle on keeping in your precious body heat during the winter season!

But as far as dressing them up goes, I've been covering them with legwarmers that I've made from old sweater sleeves. If you get belled legwarmers in a big size, they look so cute with black toes sticking out of them. Change your outlook from "hot topic" to "anime chic" (cause they make yous ankles look tiny and showcase great calves), pairing your docks with a button up shirt (and a tie, perhaps?) under a v-neck sweater with some hot jeans and you're good to go.

PLUS! (oh yeah, there's more!) those boots with a little bit of a heel can make you look long and lean (and pick your jeans hem off of the floor). Try wearing them with trouser pants, or a black dress... just play dress up and find out what you can do

first things first, legwarmers will totally change your boot style, good luck!
242  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Re: Does anyone else hate UO? on: December 10, 2005 12:09:58 AM
if it makes you all feel better, or worse, Urband Outfitters actually started out as a head shop.

however, I found this out because my friend was going to get my boyfriend a good job with benefits and reasonable hours at the local UO, only to be led around jumping through hoops like a lapdog for weeks until we find out that they hired the guy who has issues with showing up on time & a drinking problem.

needless to say I have my own issues with the company, but I already did before the job-getting debacle occurred.

However, I'll take issue with Wal-Mart before I do with Urban Outfitters. In the meantime, this company will send me their catalogs for free which tell me what I can make with my own hands that are IN style, not just myh style, and I can happily rip off their ideas and sell my own new, improved versions.

Don't hate, re-create!
