3  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / big cable leg warmers! on: February 18, 2006 03:50:32 PM
I made these to try to encourage myself to wear skirts in the winter, something I have been avoiding since before high school! (so far it hasn't worked, but it's been snowing/rainy ever since I finished them)

And here they are not on me, and with dramatic lighting to make the pattern show:

I copied the cable pattern from a tiny picture in a 2 year old add for a men's sweater.  I forget what company it was and unfortunately the picture has disappeared, but I was so happy to finally figure out some way to work these cables into a project! It's made in very cheep acrylic yarn (becoming a theme for my knitting posts) but they're still very warm.   If anyone would like, I can attempt to write up a pattern (with improvements...)! Any comments or critique are welcome!  Thanks for looking!
4  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Knit Ruffle Scarf with "Pattern" on: January 17, 2006 12:32:24 PM
The sunday before last the Washington Post printed a pattern for a ruffle scarf in the Sunday Source Section.  Three people who know I knit pointed it out to me and said I should I make it. It looked like fun so I decided to take their advice! Here it is:

I started with one leftover ball of a textured TLC yarn, but then I ran out so I used a dark brown for the last row and casting off. (I don't know what brand of yarn it is. It's some cheep acrylic stuff I pulled out of the clearance bin at  A.C. Moore.)  I really think that the edging adds something so I'm really glad I ran out of the first yarn!

The pattern is really easy if you already know garter stitch and increasing! I'd post a link to the pattern but I think that you have to sign in to the Website, and it's so easy I'll just type it out:
On VERY LONG round needles (size 13 to 15) cast on 100 stitches of worsted weight yarn.  On the first row, increase one into every stitch, therefore doubling the number of stitches.  Knit the next row.  Repeat this 4 times until you have 1600 stitches (100, 200, 400, 800, 1600).  Then knit one more row and cast off! Easy!
Edit: Here's the link to the original article, apparently you don't have to sing in:  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/05/AR2006010502521.html These insturctions might be a little more clear.  Smiley Thanks rhiandmoi!

I feel I have to really stress the LONG round needles.  I used size 13 needles and decided to make up the length by starting with 120 stitches.  By the time I got to the last row before cast off my too short round needles gave out on me and I had to do some quick stitch rescue, then go out and buy another set I ended up with this nice little mess:

But it was still a really fun and fairly fast, it only took me 4 days! (say 8 or 9 hours including crisis management) If anyone Else dares to tackle this project I'd love to see the outcome!
5  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / crazy blankets! on: November 04, 2005 10:34:34 PM
Hello out there! This is my first post! A friend introduced me to this forum recently, and since then i haven't been able to get enough!  I've been thinking of posting for a while, but I couldn't think of what to show (too many choices). So I thought I'd go with an old favorite!

This was the first knitting project I started! 8 years ago! It's completely crazy: worsted weight yarn, on size 6 needles, in garter stitch! It took me 3 years to finish! But once I started I just couldn't stop!  It was perfect, I finished it on the drive up to school my freshmen year of college, and I've been sleeping under it ever since!

Since I finished that one I've made two other slightly less crazy blankets, both for friends.  I have a picture of one other I can show here:

I made this one on size 11 needles in stockinette stitch and only took me a year and a half (on and off, I've got a lot of projects going).  I chose colors to match a quilt my friend had made and incorporate other colors in her room.  My good friends Stu and Liz think this one is nice and cozy!

Well that's all for now!  This place is awesome! I'm sure I'll have more fun things to share soon!
