If you can't find the stuff at Jo-Ann's, check Wal-Mart's camping section.  They sell a spray used on tents and jackets and stuff for under $10.  My DH uses it on his shoes - he works at a golf course and sometimes it can get pretty wet there (especially this year!!).

LOVE the shoes, they're beautiful!!!!

I don't know how viable it is, but if you have a recipe for something that looks like skin, I'd say try painting it on and letting it dry, then peeling it off carefully and actually hand-stitching it with black thread.  Then paint on more wherever it was and press it in, hopefully the fresh fake skin will act as an adhesive.  I'll let you know if I find a recipe, all I could find in the one book I looked in was melting skin.
