21  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Squid hat with link to sewing pattern on: November 23, 2008 11:20:52 PM

I was really inspired by the Poor Mojo squid hat years back and even made a knitted version of it at one point. However, knitting takes a long long time(for me anyway!) and so I was determined to make a sewing pattern...but had to learn to use a sewing machine first. This year has been full of learning all kinds of crafting skills for me and I think it really paid off at last.

You can find the pattern for this project here:

The original inspiration from Poor Mojo is here:

Also, big hugs to Kristen Perry for teaching me to sew and read sewing patterns!

Edit: There are two really simple ways of modifying this pattern. You can alter the shape of the ends on the big tentacles and top fin, like turning them into hearts! Also, making the backsides of the fabric an alternate color and adding alternate color appliques(spots, stripes, stars, etc.) will give the hat more dimension.

The next one I make I'm going to try to find some conductible thread to make light up eyes. I'll probably drill a hole in the black eyes and insert an LED there.

I love how your squid shirt turned out. I just showed my 16 year old son. I've recently bought t-shirts from Michaels for him to experiment with the bleach idea. Maybe your idea will get his creative juices flowing!

It's super easy! I hope he makes lots of fun shirts. Smiley

Is there anything specific I'd need to do to sign up for the bird swap? I haven't tried swapping before...soooo I'm a little out of the loop. Cheesy ...AND birds rock!

28  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / Bleach Stenciled T-Shirt on: September 11, 2008 11:54:23 PM
This is my first attempt at bleach stenciling a t-shirt. I cut out a piece of plastic in the shape of a squid, spritzed bleach all around the area I wanted, then sewed on some buttons for a little something extra. I did two rounds of bleach and moved the stencil ever so slightly, so the tentacles kinda got more washed out than I wanted. Next time I will put on less bleach so it doesn't bleed under the stencil, but also refrain from moving the stencil til I'm done.

I'm trying to learn more about doll and figure joints. Is there a place online that sells them/know how to make them?
