1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: The Long Awaited Poppet-Along on: June 24, 2009 11:28:55 AM
I've just got my first sewing machine and pm'd ghilie because I can't wait to make a poppet. I think I'm going to make Link from the Legend of Zelda, which I'm super excited about. I'm in England so I was just wondering does freezer paper exist here? If it does what's it called?

I couldn't find the stuff at the local grocery stores and ended up getting it from a hardware store (Ace Hardware to be exact). The brand that I've seen around is Reynolds: http://www.reynoldspkg.com/reynoldskitchens/en/product.asp?prod_id=1798 not sure if it's available in the UK or not, but you could get it online. Just Google search it. Good luck.
2  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Re: My First Poppet...a merman swimming off to rural Tennessee tomorrow on: June 23, 2009 10:58:29 AM
you guys remember those sculptures picasso made where the bicycle handlebars and seat became a bull?  and the car became a gorilla?  well, this has some of that.

and also like maybe the merman swam into a river with a lot of flotsams in it and some became part of him.

these are the stories i feel when i see this doll...

[ETA: is the metal nose protector actually the eyemech?]

Yes, the nose was part of the eye mechanism. It came from one of those toy dolls that when you moved it so it's body and head were horizontal, the weights (which were originally attached to the metal nose part/eyes, but I cut it off) would pivot inside the head of the doll and the eyes would close, simulating sleep. I preferred to position them on the outside of this doll. Gives him that road warrior / "9" look. Smiley

I'm guessing that he's named for Paul Erds, the mathematician? Because that would be kind of awesome.

There were also some pretty stitch markers and two wonderful little sock keychains. Thank you so much, purlgurl! I absolutely adore everything!

Yep, he's named after Paul Erds. The 1938 underwood typewriter Erds used to type his letter, didn't have an umlaut. What's your Erds number? Wink http://www4.oakland.edu/?id=9568&sid=243 . Glad his flight to Finland was safe and sound and that the luggage he brought with him arrived intact as well.

crafty gurll, the spool one must be from OhThat. I got one of hers too!  Grin She's resting in the cymbidium outside my front door at the moment. Long flight from Ohio. I'm hoping Bumble arrives at OhThat's doorstep soon.

Here's a much better snap of lukenlarry's owl she sent me. Isn't he cute? He's a two dimensional quilted bird with silver and pearl findings for eyes. He's enjoying the sunshine and blooming lavender on my deck at the moment.
