you sound precisely like myself.
Sorry to say, i'm not quite out of the funk yet so i'm not sure what's tried and true.
Things i'm thinking about doing though, include:
renting an instrument for a month without lessons and trying to make some wierd post-rocky music.
shutting up the "what are you going to do with that?" monster in my head and just sit down to make an elaborate collage.
any art. ANY art. the inspiration may not be there... it may feel forced as hell... but i think it's actually been helping.
wow.
wanna hang out?

That is effing awesome.
I am not a jealous creature, but I wish I had thought of this one!
Did I say that's effing awesome??

I'd DIE for a really quality photo of that to get a look at the paper detail... is it already out of your hands?

Wow. I have to try something like that.

AWESOME.
almost in a radiohead kind of way.

Ah, that was the dilema exactly!
I tried a billiion different contraptions involving hooks and thumbtacks...

I ended up tying wall-colored thread around a peice of the wood in each corner (I added little 2 inch braces of balsa wood across the corners on the top), then tying it around the pin part of a white thumbtack, with about an inch of thread between the knots.  That was enough room to place the tacks just outside the corners of the lantern, so they're push-in-able, and very easy to remove. Plus, the wood on the corners blocks the light relatively, so you really don't even notice the tacks in the ceiling.

Thanks for all your comments!
I hope that helps with the fish light cover Smiley
I'd love to see a halloween take on this idea!

I've been trying to figure out what to do with this bare lightbulb fixture in the ceiling for months now... everytime I lay in bed I accidentally stare up at it, and it was starting to drive me nuts!
Finally this idea was born, and constructed it in just a few hours.
Balsa wood, white tissue paper, and elmers glue... totalling less than $5.
Well worth it for my sanity  Wink Wink

(sorry if the photos show up HUGE)

It's wonderful how it diffuses the light... it even feels brighter in here now, if that's possible.
I'd love to make some more with different colors on the sides, or dried flowers or stencils... the possibilities are endless!

I better get busy...
409  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Industrial-looking ceiling light on: September 24, 2005 01:20:59 AM
It's the only light in my itty bitty bedroom.  (Not enough room for a big stand up torchier or anything like that and barely enough deskspace for a tiny lamp.)
I desperately need some ideas for a lamp shade or anything to mod this fixture... when I lay in bed to read I look up at a bare lightbulb in a little metallic cone.
There's got to be an alternative!

I was thinking some sort of pappier mache lantern, or draping fabric, but the problem is I can't cover up the light completely, or it will be too dim in this room, as it is the only light.
So I need something pretty to block the view of the lightbulb, but not the light.
What a pickle!
