621  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Re: Summers over party:(((( on: September 12, 2005 09:15:29 PM
You could also have everyone bring a CD (or several) with their favorite summer songs, then you can make a tape or burn a CD for everyone.

Decoupage parties are cool too.  Ask each person to bring something to decoupage (a journal, a vase, a shoebox - seriously anything) and some old magazines.  You provide a ton of news papers for the table, that modge podge glue stuff, and some brushes.

The thing I like about those ideas is you end up having something to bring home and keep, a way to remember the fun summer you had together.

Not sure the level of formality at your house - but you could ask if you could use the 'good china', use a table cloth & cloth napkins.  That alone dresses up the occassion.  You could make up fancy name cards for each person's place at the table.  Serve sparkling apple cider in wine glasses.  Whatever you end up serving, go outside and pick some flowers or greenery to dress up the serving dishes.  Little touches like that really make things look fancy.

For food, you could do something light like finger sandwiches,
-creamcheese, cucumbers & dill
-basil & provolone
-tomato & an herb cheese spread.
Just make up the sandwiches, remove the crust and cut them into triangles, or use a cookie cutter to cut them into shapes.  Then serve them on plates sprinkled flower petals.

If you want to cook something, try making a quiche, they are really not that hard, and you can use a variety of ingredients, including meat, or just veggies.

You could make a punch out of sprite, fruit juice and sherbet.... I think that's the standard baby-shower beverage!

Have fun!!!
623  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / small apartment, big party? on: September 12, 2005 01:35:07 PM
I'd like to host a cool birthday party - possibly halloween themed (in Oct.), but I live in a small apartment.  Any ideas for creative use of space?  Or a theme that would work well with cramped quarters... or to get people to socialize in the bedroom, not just the living room?

I've seen bo-peep in blue... I'm thinking white dress, blue pinafore.  That would be way cute.

I'm fairly chubby myself and have decided to go as Red Riding Hood.  It's great because the cape covers me up pretty well, and I can wear it over work-appropriate clothes for the work party, but then put on something a little more fun for parties at night.  And if I feel self conscious - just wrap that cape around me!

I think a witch is a good standard, you can dress it up or down, old & creepy or very sexy.  And again, you can make a cape or cloak to cover you up if you feel at all self conscious

This may not be the most creative costume in the world.  But I just made a hooded cape & vest for a Little Red Riding Hood costume.  I have *always* wanted to go as Little Red, but the capes I saw in stores were super cheap & unattractive, and I never seemed to get my act together in time for halloween.  Well this year I did!  I used flannel - cheaper than wool, but still soft & nice.  And I made the matching vest - which laces up with black ribbon.

It's something I can wear with work-appropriate clothes for the office, then change into something much cuter for whatever party I end up going to.

You guys are so inspiring though.  I'm in awe of everyone's ideas!!!
