1  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / Decorating Abroad on: April 17, 2006 07:09:33 PM
My husband and I are moving overseas (to the Middle East) for two years. Furnished housing will be provided, but it's very plain and somewhat ugly. I'm looking for some ideas on what to bring with us to help decorate- we can't paint the walls, and have limited weight allowances. Oh, there's also an Ikea there, which is a great plus, but not the end-all and be-all of decorating, by any stretch.

Some ideas I've already had:

-Photos. Lots and lots of photos from home.

-Raserbate some cool images, to cover up wall space. But what images?

-We have three gorgeous saris from our wedding, which will make good tablecloths or curtains.

-Bring a large jar of ModPodge, to decoupage ugly second-hand furniture or super-plain IKEA stuff

Any other ideas?
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Paper-themed Wedding suggestions? on: June 30, 2005 08:47:38 PM
Hi y'all. I'm getting married in March, and since I love the look of Mexican papel picado, and we want to make origami cranes for good luck, we've decided that maybe a paper theme is the way to go. (Uh..b/c what else do they have in common? Not much!)

I've already read the paper flower thread below, and am thinking that might be a way to go.  We've been brainstorming a little, and we were thinking that we could make paper-bag luminaries for the guest book  table, and maybe a paper-chain with love quotes? But frankly, I know y'all could help us do better.

We're getting married in a funky art-space, so we don't need tons of decorations, and it certainly isn't going to be very formal. That said, I don't want it to look like an elementary school dance, either.

Any ideas?

Hi y'all. I'm in Houston. Any other Houstonians out there? (Or Austin/San Antonio/College Station?)
