3  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / Where To Find Things To Recycle / Thrift Score on: February 19, 2004 06:51:44 PM
Thrift Score by Al Hoff.

It's not mainly abot crafts, but there are lots of crafty interpretations of things you can buy at a thrift store.  And clever ideas in general.

A highlight - there was a portrait of an artist who would put his artwork IN thrift stores to see if people buy them.

Unfortunately the book's out of print, but look for it at your local public library.

5  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / bean-lovers time savers on: February 19, 2004 06:08:28 PM
i love beans, but am far too picky (and cheap) to eat the canned ones, so I always take hours in the kitchen cooking the dried ones.  Until just recently...

Quick dried beans tutorial for non-beanie types:
1)soak em overnight
2)drain
3)add more water, cook 45-60+ minutes depending on type of bean
4) taste for doneness

My alteration was instead of cooking beans right before I made dinner, I cooked them in the morning before I went to work, since I normally get up about an hour before I leave the apt.  This has saved me soooo much time, cos then the bulk of my dinner cooking time is reduced, and I still get high quality food.
6  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / embroidered headphones on messanger bag on: February 19, 2004 05:26:29 PM
i made this messanger bag a couple years back and saw last month's readymade mag's directions for embroidering hi-tech objects onto pillows...  needless to say, my lowly undecorated denim bag got revamped with a pair of headphones.

here's the pict:

here's a close-up of the stitching:
