I've dyed with food colouring that I got from a sugarcraft shop and it turned out OK, the colours aren't as dark and look more pastely than I was hoping for but I could probably have increased the amount of food colouring to fix that. I can't be sure how colourfast it all is as I haven't made anything with the yarn.

Also, I've got undyed yarn from Fibrecrafts, Wingham Wool Works and Texere.

I think it is needle felted too. When I first saw her in the movie, I elbowed my husband and excitedly told him that I thought her hair was felt!

Definately try before you buy if possible. I joined a nearby spinning guild and they had some guild wheels that I borrowed. I tried the Ashford Traditional, which spun really well but was a little big for my tiny house and also the bobbins were too small for the bulky yarn I like to spin (although there is a bulky attachment that can be bought to go with it). Someone else gave me a wheel with slightly bigger bobbins than the Ashford but I struggled to spin on it and today, I just picked up a wheel with a funky orrifice that I think would allow for giant yarn and bobbins about 3 times the size of the Ashford. I don't think it's a production wheel (There's a hand branded "Easy Spin" on it) but I think that this is the one I'm going to go with. I've been able to give the other two back and have figured out what I like to spin.

I've made silk paper laying out silk fibres in a very thin layer on top of a net curtain (in a similar way that I lay out wool fibres when making felt) and then put another net over the top and painted a cellulose solution on top of the net. I then left it to dry and when it was dry, I had a sheet of silk paper that I could cut using a pair of scissors. I guess the same thing could be done with wool and the shapes cut out and put onto felt but I haven't tried it.

That's an excellent project! I've found that boys really love making felt (one kid said he liked it better than basketball!) as much as girls. I think it's the tactile, messy part that's so appealling, not to mention the feeling that you've magically made something out of fluff that we all get when we make felt.

I know, Cumbria is a ways away. I heard that there's a wool festival type event in North Wales, which seems closer, but is still a big trip.
