11  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Sparkly 3-D Sacred Heart! on: January 30, 2009 05:44:25 PM

whew! i finished this just in time! i had my project all planned out, but didn't think i'd have time, so i wasn't going to enter. then racky got on my case.... i feel bad for her children sometimes! Wink nag nag nag! Grin

as soon as i saw the criteria for the challenge, and read newsprint, i thought papermache! that's what you do with newsprint!

keep in mind that i can remember only 2 papermache projects i've ever done in my life - a big pig shaped piggy bank in grade 5, that never dried and eventually they all got moldy and we threw them all out, and a giant 2.5' (yes, foot!) boot that i made in high school, over 10 years ago now (i'm old, i know! Grin).

but i remembered the basics. i started out cutting a heart shape out of heavy duty cardboard, and crumpling up balls of newspaper. i used an excessive amount of masking tape, and taped all of the balls to the cardboard.

then i hauled out the flour and water mixture and went to town!
i was really trying to avoid pages with a klt of images or ads on them, so i ended up using the classifieds. this step took FOREVER to dry, i didn't think i'd get this done because of it! i would have liked to have done another layer or two, to even it out a bit, but there just wasn't time. of course, my sister told me the "put it in the over" trick AFTER it was too late!

once it was dry i sanded it to get rid of the sharper edges of dried papermache, and painted it with watered down acrylic paint. i wiped off paint, so that you can still see the newsprint below.

(i used Kroma cadmium dark red. kroma's a fabulous local paint manufacturer)

after the paint was dry, i sprayed the heart with a matte medium and sprinkled it with glitter. glitter makes EVERY project better! Grin

then i started prepping the non-heart pieces!

i took a piece of cardstock and sprayed it excessively with walnut ink (tsukinek antiquing solution) on both sides. i wanted the brown shade to be mottled, so i rubbed the ink around with a piece of scrap fabric. once that was dry, i printed sheet music out on it that i'd found from google images. i didn't use any of the sheet music i already had, because i needed the paper to be sturdy, and because i needed it to be printed landscape for the extra length to fit around the heart. as it was, i had to join two 11" pieces for each twist.

i cut the paper into 1/2" strips.

i ripped some pages out of our very old yellow pages for the flames, choosing to use the pages that listed churches and other places of worship. i thought that was fitting. i brushed the yellow pages with a watered down yellow paint (arylide yellow).

then i went through the fliers in the recycling bin and ripped out pictures that were red, yellow or orange in tone. they all ended up being from supermarket fliers, tomatoes, oranges and a beef roast!

i brushed the flier images with a watered down combination of the red and yellow paints.

once the flier images and the yellow pages were dry, i ripped them into slightly triangular shapes for the flames. i gathered them together and crunched them up, and used even more masking tape to attach them to the back of the heart!

then i sprayed the entire piece with a few layers of satin gloss.

seriously, DON'T do this inside, even if it IS 2am!

once that was dry, i added the thorns/vines. i took the 1/2" strips of brown paper and started twisting each end in the opposite direction. because i didn't want to wait for glue to dry, i attached two stripe together with fiskars photo mounts! (it was 2am, okay?). i wrapped the sheet music vines around the heart, adhering them with yet more masking tape.

and then i sprayed the whole thing again, multiple times, with satin medium! i would have preferred gloss, actually, especially with the glitter (it really popped when the paint was wet!), but i can't find any in my disater of a studio!

and it was done!

hanging in my bathroom, where it was intended for!

(if you want to see more pics of my bathroom, there are some older ones here!)

so what do you think? to recap, i used newspaper from column A, and phone book, sheet music and fliers from column B. comments and criticism are TOTALLY welcome! i had a lot of fun making this, and i think i'd like to play around with papermache more.

13  SEWING IN GENERAL / Machine Embroidery: Completed Projects / machine embroidered bibs, on vinyl and ultrasuede! on: January 24, 2009 05:36:51 PM
it seems like everyone's having babies, so i've done A LOT of hand and machine embroidered bibs over the past year! my best friend's son is now 13months old, so he's long past the point where he needs drool bibs, now he needs full coverage, easy to clean FOOD bibs!

i've seen so many cute bibs made out of oil cloth, but it's pretty much impossible to find here. plus, it's not so much my best friend's style!

i'd been thinking about making vinyl bibs for a while, and i finally got around to it in time for christmas.

i digitized all of the designs using PE Design Lite software, and then machine embroidered them. PE Design Lite doesn't have a whole lot of font options (30 or so), so i created files in photoshop with the words, and then digitized them.

this image is from a wingding font, i think it was 80s themed. the design took FOREVER to stitch, well over half an hour, and it stretched the vinyl out quite a bit, even with the stabilizer, which was irritating.

when i gave this bib to them, my friend told her son ""you'll never know what this is, but i will!" it's true, i didn't even think of that!

it's backed with brightly striped flannelette. i LOVE this vinyl, it's the same stuff i used for the vinyl octopus last winter. it's got great depth to the colour, it's almost pearlescent.

this one was a wingding as well, though i forget which font it was. halloween maybe?

i wanted a gothier type design!

it's backed in a skull print flannelette that i bought at joanns on halloween for 70% off. they only had about a yard left, not enough for a bigger project.

this one is a sublime stitching pattern that's been digitized, it was one of the samples i posted when i first started playing with the software.

it's backed with the same skull flannelette.

glitter vinyl!

torbot is one of his nicknames!

this one is backed with a star patterned cotton, because i didn't have a flannelette that matched.

their family celebrates "gothmas" in addition to the christmas that the extended family celebrates (his mom hates the tackiness of christmas), so i HAD to make him a gothmas bib!

i'm really irritated that the "mas" isn't straight, but i wasn't going to restitch all the rest of it (or waste the metallic thread i'd already used!).

the holly is embroidered in metallic thread. i think the silver was coats and clark, and the red was gutermann. i stitched the leaves twice, because the silver thread broke and it was really obvious where i rethreaded it. going over it again covered that up and made the colour a lot more dense.

after i embroidered the writing, i went back and carefully stitched around each letter with the metallic thread to tie it in to the holly better. i think i'm crazy, it took forever!

it's backed with a black cotton that has silver holly printed on it. i didn't like how thin the cotton was on the backing of the glitter vinyl bib, so i added a layer of black flannelette between the vinyl and the cotton on this one.

honestly, i'm not that happy with this one. my friend LOVED it, and i love it in theory, but it was really rushed, and i'm not perfectly happy with the lining up, or the shade of grey thread i used (it was the closest shade i had on hand.) but at least THEY loved, that's what's important, right?

i also did a set of machine embroidered bibs for sweets4ever and her son camden as well, since camden's cousin was born within weeks of him. i'm much older than my cousins, and i was always sad about it, so i'm kind of jealous that he's got a friend for life out of the deal!

i didn't like any of the fonts that were with the PE Design Lite, so i wrote up the message in a photoshop file, using one of the thousands of fonts i have on my computer. i'm not really happy with the extra stitching on the left side of the Fs, but oh well, i'm learning new things every time!

these were embroidered on brown ultrasuede, and then backed with polka dot flanellette.

i hope you like them! comment AND criticisms are welcome!
14  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / doodle stitching goodess!! bibs and a pillow! on: January 24, 2009 05:35:43 PM
i made these for sweets4ever and for knitting_nyxxie. jean had a baby in november, camden, and nyx is due to have anne marie in february (or sooner!). i did all of the hand embroidery back in november while i was visiting family, and then stitched i them together in mid december. these are all the patterns i did from doodle stitching by aimee ray.

here are the bibs for anne marie and nyx.

they're pink twil, and they're all backed with the same striped flanellette.

most of hers ended up being sublime stitching, so i've posted them here instead, but this one was a doodle stitching pattern -

this one is actually the design for a stuffy, one of the felt forest creatures. the pattern called for french knot, applique, split stitch, straight stitch, satin stitch and split stitch. i skipped the french knot in the eye, did back stitch to outline the inside instead of applique, did split stitch for the outer outline, did chain stitch for the wings instead of the straight stitch, followed the pattern for the stems, with the split stitch, and did french knots instead of satin stitch for the flowers.

the hand embroidered bibs for camden and jean

the two brown bibs are ultrasuede backed with solid brown cotton, and the two blue are twill backed with solid blue flannelette. i couldn't find a brown flannelette to match, unfortunately.

the red koi

this pattern was for the zen lampshade. the pattern calls for the thicker lines being stitched with 6 strands, and the thinner with 3. the stitches in the pattern were split stitch, lazy daisy, scallop stitch, straight stitch, french knot and satin stitch. i did mine all with 3 strands, because i hate the look of 6 strands, so i used chain stitch for the thicker lines, and back stitch for the thinner, and that gave the same effect without looking sloppy. i wanted to do them entirely in one colour, so i didn't do the white french knot, though i did use satin stitch for the eyes.

the orange koi

stitched the same as the red koi. these took FOREVER, i made my stitches way too tiny!

the owl

again one of the felt forest creatures. again, i deviated from the pattern, partly just to add interest for myself since i stitched this in pink as well! i skipped the french knot in the eyes again, though stuck with the satin stitching for the eyes and beak. i did chain stitch instead of split stitch for the outer outline, and chain stitch instead of applique for the inner outline. i continued the chain stitch instead of split stitch for the wing outline, and then followed the pattern with straight stitch inside them. the flowers were satin stitch as instructed, but the stems were back stitch instead of split stitch.

the drum set was sublime stitching, so i posted that elsewhere.

i also did a set of machine embroidered bibs for camden, but they're posted on the machine embroidery board.

and this was my big project for camden, and i LOVE the end result so much!

it's the sweet dreams baby pillow showing the bunny in the full moon, but i changed the colours up to match camden's room better.

the stitches used were satin stitch, split stitch, couching, chain stitch, french knots, back stitch and stem stitch. the pattern only called for chain stitch, straight stitch, satin stitch and split stitch, but i switched them up a bit to add interest, both for me while stitching, and for the finished project! the length of the straight stitches in the sample concerned me a bit too, i could see little baby fingers getting stuck in them, so they got switched to couching on the stars (my first attempt at couching) and stem stitch in the outer reflections of the moon.

i love the backing fabric, it just matched so perfectly, and it's such a fabulous quality flannelette! SOOO soft for baby!

i hope you like everything! comment AND criticisms are welcome!
15  NEEDLEWORK / Sublime Stitching Embroidery / sublime stitched baby bibs! on: January 24, 2009 05:35:15 PM
i made these for sweets4ever and for knitting_nyxxie. jean had a baby in november, camden, and nyx is due to have anne marie in february (or sooner!). i did all of the hand embroidery back in november while i was visiting family, and then stitched i them together in mid december. these are all the sublime stitching patterns, i did a separate post of the doodle stitching ones.

here are the bibs for anne marie and nyx.

they're pink twill, and they're all backed with the same striped flanellette.

the gorgeous yellow rose

the pattern is the lisa petrucci pattern. i used chain stitch for the petal and the hair (i LOVE how the chain stitch looks in the bangs, almost like a knit consistency), back stitch for the eyebrows, eyes, eyelashes, lips, leaves and stem, satin stitch for the eyes, french knots for the eyes, and straight stitch for the nose.

the cute little kitty!

another lisa petrucci pattern. i used backstitch for the outlines, satin stitch for the stripes, eyes, and nose. i added a few straight stitches to the eyes, because they looked funny without pupils!

i also did a cupcake pattern for her, which wasn't sublime stitching or doodling stitching, but since it seems sill to post ONE bib by itself, i'll include it here!

the design is by Krissi Sandvik, it's actually a cupcake de guadalupe, i only stitched the cupcake part. the outer liner is chain stitch, with the inside lines back stitch. the icing is stem stitch, the sprinkles are straight stitch (stitch twice in the same spot), the cherry is satin stitch, and the stem is back stitch again.

and the bibs for jean and camden.

the two brown bibs are backed with solid brown cotton, and the two blue are backed with solid blue flannelette. i couldn't find a brown flannelette to match, unfortunately.

most of those bibs ended up being doodle stitching, so they're posted here, but the drum set was sublime stitching!

the pattern was from the sublime stitching craft pad, but it's also available in the rock'n'roll pattern. i used back stitch, straight stitch, chain stitch and split stitch. i wanted to use silver thread for the cymbals (is that what they're called?), but bibs need to be washed A LOT, and i wasn't sure if it would hold up.

i also did a machine embroidered sublime stitching bib for another friend, but thats' over on the machine embroidery board!

i hope you like them! comment AND criticisms are welcome!

would anyone be into a quickie atc swap in time for valentine's day?

it would be artist's choice, either valentiney or anti-valentiney, whichever you're in the mood for! hearts and flowers, anatomical hearts, nudes, broken hearts, whatever you'd like.

i think i'd make it 18+, so that people could use vintage nudes if they wanted... they just seem to go with valentines and love! (though if someone under 18 wanted in, i might be willing to bend that! Wink)

interested? we'd have to start signups ASAP, have about 2 weeks of crafting time, then mail in time for valentine's arrival. and of course, it would be international.

20  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / ruffley ruffley doll costume! on: November 02, 2008 11:06:07 AM
i made a halloween costume! as much as i love halloween, i haven't done anything for it the last couple of years, i just wasn't up to it, and i haven't made a complicated halloween costume in even longer. this one has LOTS of pieces (damn, peeing was a production!) i'm quite proud of myself!

i made this wig for a challenge a few years ago and i think i've worn it once since then (my friends have worn it more than i have!). i decided to make a costume to go with it, and actually get some use out of it!

i made everything except the shoes (which are from no sweat)! the hoodie, the skirt, the purse, the pinafore, the crinoline, the bloomers, and the tights. the hoodie and skirt are fleece, made out of a queen sized fleece blanket that i purchased for $20 (SO MUCH cheaper than fabric by the yard), the pinafore was made out of exactly 1 metre of fleece (i have two teensy strips left) that i purchased after searching my stash for anything purple and coming up empty handed, the crinoline is made out of a pink sheer from my stash, and purple lacey curtain fabric i found at the thrift store 2 days before i needed to wear it, the bloomers are 1 yard of flannelette that i already had, and the tights are a 4way stretch cotton/spandex blend that i bought for this purpose. the big goals of this costume were that it had to be WARM, since i was wearing it to the Parade of Lost Souls, which is an outside event, and that i really really didn't want to go all the way into vancouver to get any of the supplies! and it had to be pink and purple to match the wig.

the top of the wig, and a blurry shot of the back of the pinafore

the hoodie is based on my basic hoodie pattern, with the sleeves altered to be leg of mutton, the skirt is an almost circle skirt, made using this awesome skirt pattern calculator, the pinafore and crinoline were made up as i went along, and the tights are my basic tight pattern that i developed several years ago, but apparently i've never taken pictures of, and the purse is a pattern i made up ages ago, and i lined it in purple cotton so that the fleece wouldn't stretch.

i did the gathering on the hoodie and the skirt by hand, and then decided that it was totally ridiculous, i needed to use a ruffler foot, especially considering that i was running out of time to get the costume finished, and the crinoline would need A LOT of ruffling! i knew i had one that a coworker had passed on to me, so i hauled it out, only to discover that it was for a high shank machine. ugh. so into the crawlspace i went and found ONE high shank machine. i have 9 or 10 sewing machines, and only ONE of them is high shank. so i hauled it into the studio, cleaned it off, opened up the bobbin case.... and realized it takes some strange shaped bobbin, very low and wide, which i didn't have. argh! i sent my sister a frantic e-mail asking her to call me the next morning. at 7:15 the next morning my phone rang, yes, she had a low shank ruffler foot, it was 60 or 70 years old, an accessory for her singer featherweight, but it should work.

and huraay, it fit! i gathered up the ruffle for the pinafore, and it was great. and then i started on the crinoline. urgh. my needle kept breaking, it was making bad sounds... so i called around, and it was determined that i really should have been using an actual brother brand ruffler foot, and that continuing to use the singer foot, even if i could get the needle to stop breaking, might throw my machine out of alignment, which i definitely didn't want! so off i went to the brother dealer, and came home with less room on my visa card, and a new ruffler foot. damn, this thing is so cool!

i finished the pinafore, crinoline and tights on friday, and cut out the purse and the bloomers. saturday morning i slept in, then got up and finished the bloomers and the purse, and decided to add pockets to the pinafore to hold my camera and stuff, so did those as well. i finished the costume, including hand sewing the buttons on, by about 2:30, and i didn't even have to leave the house until 5! i was quite impressed with myself, actually. Wink

(eyes and cheeks are facepaint, lips are l'oreal infallible in garnet - i hated the colour for everyday wear and gave it to my sister, but i borrowed it back for halloween!)

and it worked wonderfully. it was a really great night, just a little bit brisk, my face was a little cool, but the rest of me was cozy warm! if you'd like to see some the fabulous costumes i saw that night (cupcake! yip yips!), or some of the fabulous shrines, feel free to check out my blog.

thanks!

EDIT: i was trying to figure out how much i spent on it, so i figured i'd add that here as well -
pink fleece blanket - $20
purple fleece - $9
perfect pink vintage buttons - my stash
elastic for waistbands - stash
zipper for hoodie - stash
pink sheer - stash
purple lacey curtain fabric - $3
flanelette - stash
pink 4 way stretch cotton - $11

so the total was about $43, plus taxes. and lots of thread! i had pink and purple serger thread, but i didn't have sewing thread (i'm a thread snob!). i probably spent $10 on thread, because i ran out of the pink and had to go buy more. so around $50, which was more than i was planning to spend, but there are multiple parts that i'll wear as regular wardrobe items.

and the new ruffler foot was about $50 with taxes, which was definitely an unexpected expense, but i'll  use it forever now, so i'm not really including it. i anticipate lots of ruffles in my future!
