You could make it shorter, add cables along the side, and turn the collar into a hood. That's a bit of improvising but as long as you know you're basics and incorporate some other patterns into it you should be fine.
I started making the bikini a few days ago. After I started the cups I found a picture of a crocheted tankini that's super cute so I decided to turn it into that instead. I'm making a 29"x6" rectangle with 4 buttonholes on each side, attaching the cups, crocheting a long chain, and threading it through the top of the cups, over the shoulders, and criss-crossing across the back.
You're really not supposed to iron acrylic yarn but that's what I did when I made a scarf in stockinette with Red Heart yarn. I just turned up the steam all the way, turned the iron to the lowest heat setting and lightly ironed it. It got really thin and soft and I loved it!
