Wow Leah! What a find. Last time I saw some of those old 10 cent booklets at a garage sale the woman wanted $5 a piece for them. Needless to say, they didn't come home with me.

I'm not sure but you might have luck at a hobby shop, the type that sells the model airplanes and HO scaled railroads. I seem to remember that the last one I was in had some very tiny dowels but it's been quite a few years since I went. Next time I'm near one I'll stop in and look, but it will probably be at least a month before I'm able to go.

Just out of curiosity, how did this work out Wiccan B_itch?

any plans for the canada city guide to be divided up into child boards by provinces, like the u.s. one is divided by states? it'd make it a lot easier, in my opinion...any other canadians agree?

Although I'm not a Canadian yet, I really think this is a good idea. My family is planning a vacation/scouting mission up to Vancouver Island in the near future and I've been haunting the Canada board looking for crafty stuff in the area.
35  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: Crocheted Flower Earrings from Embroidery Floss on: September 06, 2005 10:28:32 PM
It could be worse--5 is actually on the larger side of the steel hooks.  I've got a 14 (an aunt gave me all her old crochet hooks and yarn a while back) that doesn't look like it would hook sewing thread, let alone anything else.  Needless to say, I've yet to use it.
Actually a 14 will hook sewing thread. I tried it once and went all cross-eyed trying to see the stitches. You need patience and a lot of good light to work with the tiny hooks. I've got a 15 and a 16 too, but haven't been brave enough to try using them. :-)
Btw, I love the earrings. With a little modification they look like they could be pentacles.

I hope I'm not too late to help you in your search.
Have you tried using Google's local search? I searched for thrift stores and came up with tons.
I have to agree with Megggan, the Goodwill in Dallas kind of sucks, at least in the plus sizes. They keep moving them around the store so one can never find them, and they seem to forget to put the signs in the right places. It's pretty good for child sizes though and I was able to find some knitting and crochet supplies there. Goodwill in Corvallis, however, rocks!
The Goodwill outlet in Salem is way out north on Lancaster now. Great deals if you have the time to sift through the bins and aren't looking for anything specific. The regular Goodwill on Lancaster had kind of high prices the last time I was there, but it has been a few years.
I always liked the Salvation Army store on Lancaster st. in Salem too. Nice lighting and good deals there, but I haven't been there in a while.
There's a newish store in Monmouth called Downtown Trends, I think it's a consignment store, and I haven't been in yet, but it might be worth it if you're on your way somewhere else. It's on the block just north of the stoplight on 99W.
That's it for my first hand knowledge. I hope it helps.
