1  The Little Chef in Halloween Costumes by katydidit on: November 02, 2008 06:32:47 PM
This is my first post here on Craftster so bear with me!

This year, I was at a loss for what to dress my 15 month old, Matthew, up as. His big brother went back and forth about what he wanted to be, but was leaning towards Star Wars. I though, great, I'll get a little Yoda costume for the baby and be done with it. But no, 2 weeks before Halloween, big brother picks a Werewolf costume.
So, I dig through my stash fabric for inspiration. I find some very nice white stretch twill, meant to be pants but never go around to it. That same day, the baby was in the kitchen with me playing with pots and pans. I thought, hey, maybe I could do a little chef costume! I dug up an old Mccalls boys button down shirt pattern and set about trying to modify it. I extended each front side panel out about 4 inches, added a stand collar, sewed on some big white buttons and voila, chef jacket! I also had a small amount of navy and cream check fabric, just enough for the pants. The hat was a pattern I found online. The jacket and hat are closed with Velcro since I didn't want to deal with trying to button eight buttons on a kid who can't stand still for more than a few seconds. Lastly, we threw on his red Chucks and he was good to go! Excuse the orange number tag, that is from the costume contest he was in. He won Cutest!

The Mustache was DH's idea, and it totally made the costume!

Thanks for looking!

Edited to add the best part: Total cost, about 2 bucks for buttons and velcro.
