1  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / The Amazing Squid Girl! on: October 31, 2011 07:37:52 PM
Amazing!  Alive!
World Famous!
SQUID GIRL!
 Shocked

Straight from the sideshow into your living room...

A real living girl with an arm of tentacles...

Mop cap created from scratch.  Opera length glove painted to match rubber tentacles from Archie McPhee.  Victorian bathing suit is a pair of shorts and a T-shirt embellished with grosgrain ribbon to make it look more old timey.  Knee highs purchased and shoes my own.
2  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Squid Girl and American Gothic on: October 30, 2011 06:49:06 PM
So for some reason I am incapable of buying a completed costume.  This leads to much frantic shopping, web research, crafting, and praying before the best night of the year...Halloween!

Behold this year's insanity...

I'm a sideshow freak...Squid Girl!

Check out my tentacles (ala Archie McPhee)...

Made the mop cap, embellished the shorts and shirt with grosgrain ribbon to make them more like a Victorian bathing suit, painted the opera length glove to match my tentacles, made the sash (vinyl letter stickers on satin...no iron on lettering would stick to the satin...doh!), threw on som knee highs and black flats and viola!

SQUID GIRL!  WORLD FAMOUS!  ALIVE!

PS...hubby went as the guy from Grant Wood's American Gothic

(The aloof chic he's standing next to is our trusting mannequin Claire)
3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Baby Shower Badges on: November 06, 2009 07:38:16 PM
I co-hosted my sister-in-laws baby shower and made a bunch of decorations for the party.  These were my favorite and were really popular with the mom-to-be and the grandmas-to-be.

The centers were made out of opaque shrinky dink paper that can go through the printer.  The elephant images are from the baby's bedding as are the sage green and brown colors.

I really enjoyed making them!
4  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Odd Couple--Red Shirt Zombie and a Flamingo on: November 06, 2009 07:33:06 PM
Here are my me and my hubby this Halloween:

Star Trek Red Shirt Zombie

Pink Flamingo

Most of our costumes are handmade.  I made his shirt...started out as a basic long-sleeved red t-shirt.  I cut off the cuffs and shortened it so that it looked more like a Star Trek uniform.  I also added a black v-neck to the shirt.  The big hole is supposed to look like a phaser burn hole.  Here's what the wound looked like...

It's basically tissue paper, glue and body paint but it looks sooooo nasty!

For my flamingo costume I made the mask, the headdress and the tutu.  I added featherd fringe to a t-shirt to look a bit like wings.

All in all our costumes were a hit.  My hubby's wound feel off half way through the night, which was kinda funny, but other than that everything stayed put!
5  COOKING / Dessert / *Roar* on: August 26, 2009 07:56:27 PM
My dad's a Leo so I decided to make him a lion cake for his b-day.

He's banana flavored with chocolate frosting...yum!

Visually, he's a composite of several lion's I found on line.

Hope you like!
6  GLASS CRAFTS / Glass Crafts: Completed Projects / Wirey Pendants on: August 25, 2009 01:40:00 PM
Just a couple of fused pendants I finally got around to wrapping.

I really love the glittery green in the white center of the one second from the right...it will be hard to part with that one!
7  GLASS CRAFTS / Glass Crafts: Completed Projects / Kiln Firing before Nighty-Night on: August 25, 2009 01:37:42 PM
Being unemployed has really freed me up to finally pay some attention to my kiln...it was a kick in the glass so to speak!  Wink

Here's a kiln full of night lights pre-fire...

They were all tack fused--my first time...they didn't soften as much as I would have liked so I think a re-firing is in their future.  For whatever reason I didn't photog 'em after the firing.  The lobster light has already gone to a friend who grew up in Maine.

Hope these light up your day!  Grin
8  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Comfy Blue Shawl on: August 25, 2009 01:33:40 PM
Just finished this one up and wanted to share.  I really like the way the pattern turned out and how well it works with the color.

...and a detail of the pattern...

Thanks for lookin'!
9  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Wire-Wrapped Jade Cab on: January 12, 2009 08:03:29 PM
Just took a class on wire wrapping cabs...this is my first piece.

Can't wait to do another one!

10  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Wire and Bead Extravaganza! on: January 12, 2009 06:48:04 PM
I recently took an intro to wire working class at my local bead store and have been beading and wrapping like a lunatic.

Here are some bracelets:

Lots of fun glass beads...I LOVE magnetic clasps!

I just finished this puppy tonight.  It's a birthday gift for one of my colleagues:

It's all natural stone (though for the life of me I can't remember the name of it...think it's a quartz).

Let me know what you think.
