2  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Pricing question on: September 12, 2008 09:08:28 AM
Hello there everyone, long time no post. Sorry about that been a busy gal.

Anywho I have a question that maybe you all could help me with. A contact has asked me to spin some yarn for a yarn shop that she is working with and she wants to know how much I charge per pound of fiber. What would you think is reasonable, this would be a wholesale order and I don't want to overcharge a friend but I also don't want to undercharge and not get a fair price. The fiber is a quality fiber with cashmere (which I would totally spin on my own) and I'm lost with regards to what to do.

Thanks for your help  Grin

4  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / Bellydance/Mermaid Costume on: July 11, 2008 07:49:44 AM
I know it's not halloween, but I'm wearing a costume in public anyway. Every year there's this insane parade out on Coney Island in NYC called the Mermaid Parade and people come dressed as (you guessed it) MERMAIDS!!!! Well they really come dressed as lots of things its more of a "Let your freak flag fly" day then an actual structured parade. For pics of the insanity click here but be warned there will be boobs! A bunch of friends and I decided to march this year and I had to make an awesome costume. I'm a bellydancer by night (and a fancier by day but don't tell anyone I have such a normal job) so I decided to combine a bellydancer and a mermaid and this is what I came up with.

I made the tail out of some lame fabrics, the base is textured and the bottom is simply a pleated triangle (no shaping needed) and I stuffed it with aqua tulle to give it a full look.
The top is a bra that I cut the straps off and replaced with sequined elastic trim to create a halter. Then I individually glued the sequins to the bra cups and sewed on the chains and pearls. I also had the center beads on jump-rings and the pearls side bits are sewn to the bra and strung on that elasticized jewelry wire (it's plastic I don't know the real name for it)

(Me and craftster user Molliemoo2883)
I also made her a tail out of sateen fabric and stuffed the bottom of it with tee-shirts for weight. She made her shirt with puff paint and my mom's help

Thanks for looking!

6  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday 5/2/08 on: May 02, 2008 07:41:30 AM
Okay so no one's started the thread yet I guess I have the honors.

The first up is girl scout cookie from a batt I recieved in a swap. It's alpaca, wool and angelina. Spun on my drop spindle worsted weight a little less then 2oz and 80 yards single.

The second yarn is also alpaca about 300 yards 3.3oz two ply sport weight spun using the long draw. I had a hard time prepping the alpaca and I realized the best way was to break out my very neglected hand cards and make some rolags.

9  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Some FO's to share on: March 19, 2008 10:19:23 AM
I feel bad I've been neglecting the knitting board here so I figured I'd post some FO's to show some love.

First up the Airy Lace Wrap from fitted knits

Mods: I shortened the ties by at least 2 feet and knit a hole in one side to thread a tie though. I also lengthened the body by one cable repeat.

Excuses from Magknits

Mods: I left off the ties (too busy for my taste)

The Sugar Plum Shrug from IK Holiday 2007

Mods: I knit this in yummy soft cashmere (bought on sale 50% off at WEBS) instead of scratchy mohair

Yes my dog loves getting in my frame when I take pictures.

And since I have so many new sweaters I knit one for the puppy too!
Warm and Woolly from Doggy Knits

Mods: Added stripes, lengthened the ribbing on both sides by 2 inches

10  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Crochet Practice Poi on: March 08, 2008 04:19:05 PM
Hi all I just started poi spinning and though I love my store bought poi I thought I could make some real easy and cheap.

I posted the pattern on my blog alond with a short video of me spinning them so you can see how they work. If you want to make some please let me know how they turn out the pattern is here

I used some ugly stash yarn because I didn't know how the final product would turn out and I stuffed the poi balls with scaps of jersey fabric to make them heavy but not hurty (when I wack myself it's a shock but not painful) Grin

If you want to learn about poi I suggest http://www.homeofpoi.com/

Let me know what you think.
