11  Abraham Owls in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by kathleeen on: July 02, 2011 03:06:17 AM
Hello I made these sweet little owls as gifts. The photos are not very fantastic but as its 8pm this is as good as I can get them.
The pattern is free and it's from here:

http://www.lollychops.com/lollychops/2008/11/abraham-owl.html

I did have to make some modifications as they are baby toys so:

I made the wings bigger and stitched them (pretty average at blanket stitch but never mind) firmly down over the side seam as the bub I love likes to chew things so I didn't want her to inhale any felt.

I stitched down eyes for choking reasons.

I added a rattle inside. This is very simple to do. I bought Kinder Suprise eggs, and ate the egg, threw out the toy and added dried peas and wheat (just a pinch inside). I sealed up the egg and it made a very good rattle. Just remember not to machine wash the toy or it will get mouldy. I guess you could find something else that wouldn't do that but I was using what was at hand.

I think my twin Abraham Owls turned out cute. I made them in retro colours to amuse myself  Smiley Sorry about photo quality.

12  Sponge Cake in Dessert by kathleeen on: June 08, 2011 12:32:28 AM

The recipe is just a standard sponge cake that you can find anywhere pick the one you like best! Or buy one..

The topping is meringue, I traced around the tin on baking paper then spread out the meringue. You may like yours a lot more undercooked than mine but I like it crispy.

Construction was easy. I cut one punnet of strawberries length ways thinly as its winter and they are expensive right now.

I cut the cake in half. Then layered it:

Cake
Layer of whipped cream (you need to whip it yourself till quite stiff the stuff in the can won't work
Then I put a layer of strawberries with the points facing out
More cream
Cake
Cream
Strawberries again
Cream
Meringue
If you are worried about all that cream just put enough on to get the layers to stick together.
Thanks for looking!

13  Pecan Pie! in Dessert by kathleeen on: May 30, 2011 11:40:47 PM

Sorry about the photos but its pouring (and freezing) here in Sydney so this is the best I could do.
The recipe is free:
http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/9462/pecan+pie

I like this one as it has no Maple Syrup like others and no corn syrup which isn't available here.

You will notice that I have used Puff Pastry instead of shortcrust, this is because I don't tolerate the colour in most of the frozen and this was the only pastry I could find. I'm too lazy to make my own.
Thanks for looking!

15  My 'Minuscule' Inspired Cake in Dessert by kathleeen on: September 29, 2010 02:17:37 AM
My favourite TV show is Minuscule, a five minute an episode show where little insects have adventures. (Check it out on You Tube)

Here's my cake, I haven't made many so its an amateur effort what do you think?

And the final result, it was hard to get a good shot late in the afternoon:
