4  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Get Product and Website Opinions / Re: Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Wants My Dress on: June 03, 2011 02:02:27 AM
You know though, there's no guarantee that they actually are trying to low ball her because of this thread. They may just flat out be trying to low ball her because she's young and they think they can get away with it because of that.

I am assuming that they found out about her and her dresses on this site. If they are doing their job than they would have seen this thread. Just my opinion. I just find it interesting that the price wasn't stated right at the beginning when they were first interested and only came way after this thread was posted. Most people would want to share exciting news and they might have waited for her to react. PLUS, her initial post was that they were interested in the pop tab dress and NOW it includes both ... they did their homework, trust me.

This is why I suggested that you shouldn't have posted this thread ... they have probably been reading your thoughts and the responses and figured they could low ball you since you were so confused as to what the dress was worth. They had the upper hand because they saw your cards. It is unfortunate.
You should not have to defend why you put any price on your dresses. It's not the time, the materials etc that are of value in this case. It is the fact that you are an artist, not just a crafty person and as such you created a unique piece worth paying admission to see. Respond with the price that you think you deserve and go from there.
I am sure that now that you have gotten the attention from Ripley's that it is not inconceivable that someone else may approach you. Use this experience as motivation to create something bigger and better while you wait to see what they respond. If they accept your counter, great!. If they don't, then c'est la vie, and learn from this. Don't question your talent, they didn't when they approached you first. But when you questioned the value because of your age etc ... than they went with that.
Regardless, don't accept the $450, it is an insult.

I would ask them first what they are offering, then go from there. They might surprise you with a great offer that exceed what you might have asked. BUT it might not be a great idea to solicit advice in such a public forum, they might see it and use it to give you a lower number. As an artist, every piece can be considered "sentimental" so I would focus on the fact that you are an ARTIST (not just a 17 year old) and the TIME and TALENT it took for you to complete such an ambitious and unique one of a kind piece of ART.

Good luck!

FYI ... art can not just be calculated just on time and materials, if it were than pieces would not go for thousands or millions. Give yourself credit as an artist.
7  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / Re: Girls shirt dress with contrast sleeves, and others made from vintage patter on: March 29, 2011 08:27:59 PM
hideousness of the artwork???  Shocked   I love kids vintage patterns and the artwork is one if the things that I love about them, besides making something out of them. I guess you have to be from that time to appreciate them.

Love the jackets and top you made!
