263  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Vintage Craft Projects / What to do with Fingertip Towels? on: August 25, 2005 10:26:26 AM
I was given a package of really beautifully embroidered vintage fingertip towels. The ones I have are very thin, more like handkerchief material.  I hate to use them to wipe anything dirty on, but I'd like to do *something* with them.  They're white, about 6 1/2 by 11 inches long, with embroidered flowers and a green hem along the bottom. (Sorry - ye olde digitale camera is on the fritz or I'd show you a pic.)

I saw a few bags and things on this site, and the post about vintage towel patterns. But like I said, these towels are quite a bit flimsier than those projects seem to require. My question is...does anybody have a good idea for what to do with these little towels?  There are about 6 in the package.

thanks everybody! i will now attempt to make flowers. i'll keep you posted on my progress (if i make any...).  in answer to a previous suggestion, i am, alas, not so talented yet that i can make up my own patterns for flowers. scarves, yes. flowers, no.  i tried a made-up flower pattern and i ended up with a lumpy puddle of yarn.

those are really cool.  i like the bag idea, but what about a set of pillows or a bolster?
266  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: When did you learn to crochet? on: August 20, 2005 06:33:15 AM
My grandmother tried to teach me to knit when I was about 6, but she was left handed so I had a really hard time learning how to hold the needles! Then, I went to a friend's house for Christmas about 4 years ago and she was making a simple scarf for her husband. She showed me the basics and then let me finish the scarf. I have been crocheting ever since. My new project is flowers.

Thanks Wondergirl - I did find this site in my searches and it had a couple of things I could use, but many of the flowers there are poufy and roundy instead of flat and pointy.

Hi -

I need some flower power!

I'm looking for very specific crochet flower patterns.  I need the flowers to be about palm-sized, flat, and not have much (if any) open work. Solid little flat flowers, basically. I've looked through the internet, and I've found a couple good ones. Most have roundy petals so I'm now also searching particularly for a flower with pointy petals instead of roundy ones.

I also cannot find a pansy pattern that I can make work. It's like the pansy is my personal crochet Holy Grail... Whenever I make one it turns out all bunchy, despite my close attention to the pattern.

If you have any suggestions or info, it would be much appreciated!
