21  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / slow month! on: September 09, 2004 11:50:33 AM
is anyone else out there with a crafty business having the slowest month EVER right now too??  why is this happening?  i would think with back-to-school-ed-ness, our little businesses would be flourishing.
22  UNITED STATES / Rhode Island / PBS exposure for crafters on: September 09, 2004 10:03:14 AM
i've been talking with Rhode Island PBS about a fundraising idea - local crafters donating a sample of their handmade goodies for the annual auction in exchange for television exposure and info about the crafting community and individuals around here.  are you, or do you know anyone who would be interested in this?  does this sound like a good idea?  do you have any further suggestions for how to make this a success for all parties involved?
23  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / a-line tablecloth tree skirt on: September 07, 2004 08:12:35 PM
i found this linen-y weavey tablecloth at savers, and thought it was the perfect fall color for a fall skirt.  so i whipped up an a-line skirt and here is the result, the first in what i hope will be a series of tree skirts!  if i make more, i'll post 'em here!

old tablecloths, drapery, etc. make kind of nice skirty material because they're a bit heavier than something like a cotton blend, but always hang nicely - good for fall weather!

please bear with me, as my digital camera takes kinda crappy low-light pictures...

24  UNITED STATES / Rhode Island / rhode island recycles for education on: September 03, 2004 03:59:07 PM
hey, you know the recycling center at the border of prov/cranston?
you know, the place where you can buy all sorts of strange crafty supplies for 10 cents a pound?
(if you don't know, this place is pretty awesome. but, you have to be a member to go.  memberships cost about $50 a year per person.)

does anyone have a pass or know where i might be able to borrow a pass from to go?
cause really, what i most need in the world is more stuff.
25  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / scent-free hands! on: July 06, 2004 09:19:22 AM
my mom just taught me this totally amazing way to get any smell out of your hands from crafting, chopping onions, aerosols, etc.

after said smell has seeped into your little hands, you just wash them with a tablespoon or so of table salt like you would with soap under running water.  then you wash your hands with soap and voila!  clean hands, no smell.

some say the same works with lemon, but i find that is not the case.  also it would get kind of expensive and silly to have lemons around just to wash your hands with.  but yay for salt!
26  UNITED STATES / Rhode Island / cutie craft shops in rhode island on: May 18, 2004 06:01:00 AM
hi all!  i was thinking maybe we could make a list of awesome handmade shops in providence and beyond, since there's been a renaissance of sorts going on.. with cloth., okie dokie, and abode opening on westminster street, and HGTV landing in providence to focus on some craftspeople (are any of you going to be on it?)
the other day i discovered frog and toad on hope street, a sort of part-garden charm, part-asian housewares, part-craftycrafts.. run by totally friendly, nice people..you should all check it out. i spent a ton of money there on mothers day.

27  UNITED STATES / Rhode Island / gettin crafty 20's style! on: April 09, 2004 12:35:09 PM
hey all!  i thought i would forward on this message from as220 regarding volunteering for their annual fool's ball.  i've volunteered before doing decorations and it's really pretty awesome and fun to do if you have the time!

love,
susie

AS220 is still looking for artists to help with decorations for the 2004
Fools Ball--our annual fundraiser and the Party of the Year.  Our theme this
year is the Harlem Renaissance, so we are looking for Harlem/20s-themed
creations.  We especially need people to work on some of the following
projects:

Posters and signs: We are transforming the stairwell into a New York
subway station, complete with 20s and 30s-style movie posters,
advertisements, and signs for performances.  There are a lot of
great resources on the web for finding examples of the aesthetic
of that area, and if you are interested in making posters I can
        send you more information.

Beads: We would like to make beaded lampshades for the cafe and other
spaces; if you enjoy beadwork, this would be a great way to get
involved.  We'll provide the beads, you provide the creativity.

Bar: There will be an additional bar in the Perishable Theater classroom
space that we can construct; as long as it's functional, anything
        goes.

I am also open to more suggestions; if the Harlem Renaissance theme
inspires you, get in touch with me and tell me your idea.

AS220 will provide the necessary materials.

Of course, everyone who volunteers will receive a ticket to the 9:00 House
Party.

For more information on this year's Fools Ball, go to
www.as220.org/foolsball.

To get involved, contact Rachel at 831-9327 or rachel@as220.org
