11  Re: The new and improved San Diego Craftsters get-together thread! in California: South by boygirlparty on: January 26, 2006 12:18:02 PM
hey ladies, sorry i missed the last meeting, i just found out about it.  any news about the march show?  also, if any of you are free this saturday, i curated an art show here in sd at magpie gallery and boutique on fern st.  the opening is 7pm-12am and the show runs for a month.
magpie is a super cute store/gallery. once in awhile they have designer trunk shows, you should inquire with the owners if that's something you're interested in since they work a lot with local designers!

here's the flier for the art show  (sorry, it's sort of big):

12  the craftster guide to nifty, thrifty and kitschy crafts! by leah!!! in Craftster Itself by boygirlparty on: January 17, 2006 12:19:08 PM
ok, i know there's a thread talking about a potential craftster.org book, but i thought a thread needed to be started to view and discuss LEAH'S FORTHCOMING BOOK!!!  ok, it looks incredible:

The Craftster Guide to Nifty, Thrifty, and Kitschy Crafts: Fifty Fabulous Projects from the Fifties and Sixties
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1580087477/sr=1-1/qid=1137528510/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-5576374-0392666?%5Fencoding=UTF8

congratulations, leah!!!  this is such a huge accomplishment for you and craftster, not to mention a totally amazing looking project book.  any project titled "macaroni glamour" has my immediate attention.

13  Re: hotlinking: good or bad? in Crafty Business Discussion by boygirlparty on: January 13, 2006 08:40:41 AM
Here is a website that will generate the needed info if you have access to the .htaccess file of your domain.

i couldn't figure out yet how to have the desired effect i was hoping for (some sort of file that redirects hotlinked files to my webpage in a separate window.  seems like it might take some sort of black magic to do that, and seems weird to hijack someone's browser like that out of spite anyway!) but i used the link above and recommend other people do too. thanks, angil!

it lets you allow certain websites such as craftster.org, and redirects all other hotlinked queries to an image of your choice.  my choice was this:

which looks pretty awesome on the pages that have hotlinked 15-20 huge image files in a row (what are those people thinking?!)

in the case of this, all the hotlinked images will still be taking bandwidth from my site, but it will be less bandwidth and also they will feel like fools.  if you're in a situation where you're being charged for your bandwidth and it's causing outages on your website, you shouldn't have a replacement image for hotlinked images, or that too counts as a 'page view'.

14  Re: Wrist Injuries in Knitting: Discussion and Questions by boygirlparty on: January 09, 2006 08:04:15 AM
i had very similar problems to this, which i ignored, and got so bad it was excruciating and i couldn't even lift everyday objects like a cup of coffee, let alone do my work, write, paint, whatever.  i saw an acupuncturist who helped a LOT, wore wrist braces, and have ever since been doing exercises like this that have helped:

simple exercise you can do to stregthen your wrist.

1. put a rubberband or hairband around your hand and bring your fingers together like you're picking up something small.
2. slowly, and with control, start to open your hand
3. expand your hand completely and hold it for five seconds, then slowly (with control) bring it back down to step 1.
repeat!

use more rubberbands as you start to feel stronger, or get one of these:
http://www.catspaw.com/
(i just got one and it's $9.99 including shipping - works similar to the rubberband thing but it's made for this exercise)

there is also mudras ("yoga for your hands")

lastly, i found some things you can do at your desk to rejuvenate your eyes, back, hands, etc. since sitting on here on craftster is probably not helping the situation!

16  stolen artwork from giant robot in san francisco in California: Central by boygirlparty on: December 16, 2005 07:35:58 PM
hi, i know this isn't really a craftster oriented topic, but it is a pretty tight community of individuals who know how hard it is to make things for a living.  so, here is some bad news of mine, and if anyone can help (i'm very hopeful, i know) please, please do.  please spread the word:

----

my name is susie ghahremani, my email address is susie @ boygirlparty.com, and i just received word from san francisco that six of my pieces from my show at giant robot right now ("let's share" at gr-sf) have been stolen.

if you know anything about the theft or can spread the word to help return the pieces to me or the people who have purchased them, please help.

among the pieces stolen was one of my favorite pieces to date, this miniature of a baby chicken:

giant robot can be contacted at gr-sf.com, they are located at 622 shrader st. in san francisco.

thank you for any help finding these works.

20  paypal overseas shipping solutions? in Crafty Business Discussion by boygirlparty on: April 04, 2005 06:51:04 AM
i've tried out two different methods for overseas shipping with paypal's shopping cart, and both have been less than awesome:

originally, i had a button that said "click to add $2 to cover international postage", which sort of worked, but sometimes people were so grossly over or under charged for shipping to their destination!  and of course, not everyone clicked.

it looked like this:

and said:  "international shipping :: $2 :: for destinations outside the u.s.a. and canada. if overseas shoppers don't select this, i reserve the right to ship via donkey on an inflatable raft"

now, i have in my FAQ under shipping rates that the website only accepts orders to the u.s. + canada, but international orders should contact me for a custom shipping quote (which i give based on weight and destination, so it is precise!) but people are just sneaking by and ordering with the u.s. + canada shipping rates, and when i invoice them for the difference, sometimes they don't even reply or follow up!

it's extremely frustrating, not to mention an incredible waste of time!

has anyone found a solution??
also, is there anything i should know about permits to ship internationally, customs or tax stuff or anything?
