1  Functioning clock built from wood in CHALLENGE 17 ENTRIES by jessicaem on: February 28, 2007 07:57:56 PM
My husband, Lee, purchased an incomplete, home-made Thomas Clock movement on eBay for $1, and then he purchased some Thomas Clock plans on eBay for $3.  He used the plans to build the gears that were missing.  Many of the parts of the clock he bought were unfinished or finished badly, so he spent a lot of time measuring and filing and re-working those parts.  And he built a frame, from parts bought at the hardware store, for the clock to sit in.  And he made pulleys by hand and purchased weights from Sears.  He also fashioned a pendulum from some sort of wall decoration from a thrift store.

The result is a functioning clock that keeps accurate sounds the seconds with a pleasing tick tock.  It is entirely hand made out of wood.  Though Lee might not have built it entirely from scratch, he resurrected its lifeless body from someone else's discarded craft pile.  He built it new organs and salvaged its bones and showered true crafter's devotion on it, making this clock entirely his own.  And so I submit it on his behalf, with his blessing, for your consideration.

Here he is with it as it looks today in our dining room:
