11  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Hunger Games Swap rd 1 (SU through Jan 27th or we reach 24 send by Feb 24th) on: January 08, 2012 03:07:01 PM
I'm a farmer from 9... Not my first choice. But never seems to be in Panem  Wink

Me too! Also not my first choice, but oh well. I don't think it's based on where you really live, though, because I'm pretty sure where I am is District 4 (which is where I consider myself to live, that's what I put on my questionnaire!)
12  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Good Omens hoop (Crowley/Crawly) on: January 07, 2012 04:39:03 PM
Hi everyone!
I made this for the Good Omens One Tiny Thing swap and my partner has received so I can post it here!

I titled it Temptation. For those of you who haven't read Good Omens (which I highly recommend!), this is the demon Crowley (here in his serpent form, Crawly) on a branch of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden, with the apple that he will later offer to Eve.

This is the most involved embroidery project I've ever done, and I had so much fun doing it. It's in a four inch hoop. It's my own illustration, based on some photos of snakes hanging out in trees. The snake is filled in with short little stitches. I used variegated green embroidery thread and tried to make the stitches look a little like scales. The tree branch is filled with longer stitches to try and make it look like bark. The apple is satin stitch.

It's all nicely finished on the back with a piece of red felt, but I don't have a picture of that. First time I've ever finished a hoop, though! That was fun, too.

Thanks for looking! Cheesy

Edited to add: I forgot to add a link to the blog post I made: http://emilymayhem.blogspot.com/2012/01/temptation.html
You can check out the in-progress pictures there, if you'd like. Cheesy

My favourite moment, hands down, was the Gale and Katniss kiss. I shipped them from like the first page, and wasn't overly thrilled with the ending. I mean, Gale didn't intentionally blow up Prim. He built the explosives, not knowing what they would be used for. He had no control over what District 13 did with them. Not his fault.

I totally know how disappointing it is when your favorite shipping doesn't come true, and I swear I'm not trying to tell you you're wrong or anything. But for me, this is the one series where the romantic conflicts actually evolved naturally for the characters.

Quoting just that but I agree with this whole post. Thank you for saying pretty much exactly what I think in such a well-thought-out manner! I never really liked Gale, anyway, from that conversation in the woods where he talks about running away, and yeah, I kind of thought he turned into a jerk by the end of it. I just didn't like his personality. Oh, here, I wrote this on my Tumblr awhile back:
Except Gale, I dont know, most of the fandom at least kind of likes himand I dont. I dont hate him, but I dont like him. I think he turned out to be kind of a jerk. I think his intentions were noble, but, I dont know. He let himself be swept into things. Just because youre playing for the other side doesnt mean you arent just a piece in the game.

And he didnt seem to care as much about Katniss as he claimed to. He missed his chance with her, its not her fault, and he wouldnt give it up. And I dont think the resolution of his story was out of character, like some of the fandom doesI think it was totally in character, based on what he had become by the end of Mockingjay. Katniss may not have deserved Peeta, but Gale didnt deserve Katniss, and he was the one being a jerk about the whole thing.

So yeah. I really dont like Gale very much at all.

And on the whole, I agree that I felt the romance seemed very natural. Especially after my older sister told me how she related a lot to it because her personality and that of her husband are a lot like those of Katniss and Peeta, respectively.

(Also not trying to tell anyone they're wrong! Just excited to have some people to discuss things with.)

On the subject of the books sort of melting into one epic book, I always give that as my excuse for finishing them all in 4 days straight. I actually wouldn't mind having the three compiled into one giant book. They flowed together very well with no real breaks in between.

I'm going to try to read the series again before the movie comes out, but I haven't started again yet. I just read them for the first time before Christmas.

My pinterest is here: http://pinterest.com/emilymae. I'm starting a THG-only board in a bit.

Oh my goodness, I would have a hard time parting with that, too! It's so cute.

The last swap I was in was pretty small, so I really hope this one will be big and we'll be able to have lots of fun discussion!
17  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Scrapbooking: Completed Projects / Re: Smash books, anyone? on: January 05, 2012 12:37:35 PM
I've never heard of these, but I'll keep an eye out from now on.

I found mine at Michaels, but they also have them at Archiver's, I've heard, and a bunch of places online. Cheesy

So, this is a slightly different kind of scrapbooking that I've seen a lot of elsewhere on the Internet, but not much of at all here on Craftster!

The concept is very similar to the "junk journals" you might have seen. A Smash Book is just a brand name, ready made (by K and Company), spiral bound book filled with different patterned papers and photos that you use to "smash" in whatever you've got laying around. You can use it kind of like a traditional scrapbook, with more thought out layouts, or you can just stick in whatever you want, wherever you want, on the spur of the moment.

I got two for Christmas, and I'm having a lot of fun with the first one. They come in a few different themes. The one I'm working in is the black one, the Mod Style. They can all be found here, on the K and Company website.

Those are just my first two pages. I'm treating mine a little more like a traditional scrapbook (which I think is good practice, as I'd like to start scrapbooking for "real" soon). You can see some close ups on my blog, if you'd like:  http://emilymayhem.blogspot.com/2012/01/smashing.html.

Are any of you smashing? I'd love to see some of your pages! Maybe we can start a smash-along, if anyone is interested!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! I was really proud of that hoop, it's the first real embroidery piece I've done! Cheesy

Also, so sorry to hear someone got flaked on. Sad I wish I had the time to angel.

Let start with an easy one, did you enjoy one book over the others?

Anyone else have have any favorites?

I think my favorite one was the first one. I read them all in about 4 days, as well!

The part where she finds Peeta in the mud is one of my favorites, too! Pretty much any part with Peeta is a part I love. And I like all the comic relief in Catching Fire (mostly parts with Finnick).
