1  Re: Knit DNA! in Knitting: Completed Projects by caflygrl on: November 08, 2007 10:14:38 AM
as a bio geek i am in love! awesome job! even if it is mutant, gives it more character  Wink
funny i stumbled upon this post, as i am currently taking a break from my genetics lab write up...

about how big is it?

This pic might give some scale as to how big it is:

If I had to guess I'd say 8-9 inches long??

Someone asked how long it took to make it, not long at all!! The black parts are really just knitting in the round with some increases and decreases. FYI, she has you do yarn overs for the increases which leaves some holes that you can thread yarn through later. But I changed to kfb halfway through and it worked a lot better.

And this pattern is not hard at all! The designer figured out the hardest part, getting the black parts to twist the right way. It's basically a bunch of tubes.

I'd love to see more people make this!! I think a tiny keychain one would be cool but I'd have to knit with embroidery floss and toothpicks, not fun!

2  Knit DNA! in Knitting: Completed Projects by caflygrl on: November 07, 2007 12:20:12 PM
So my friends and I did a swap and the person I had is a science-y gal. After much searching typing in terms such as "bacteria," "science," "germs" i found a pattern for a knit DNA double helix!!

It was so fast to make. I was trying to make it scientifically accurate with the colors in the "bars" but I didn't quite do it right so I've dubbed this mutant DNA. My friend loved it!

Pattern is from here:

Oooh!! I didn't even know there was a CAL for this but I made one and I LOVE it. It is for my bf's cousin who had a baby about a month ago. I used LB Homespun in two colors. It is so soft I wanted to keep it!

4  I am ready for Mother's Day! in Mother's Day by caflygrl on: May 07, 2007 08:28:05 AM
It is always hard to find something for my mom! She doesn't really have a lot of hobbies, doesn't need any clothes, I gave flowers one year and that was a disaster (snail incident) and she's across the country so I can't take her out for lunch. I knit but she's not one for shawls and it's too warm in CA for hats, gloves etc. I think everyone on here thinks their mom is difficult. Somehow I always manage to find something... plus this year we are going on vacation so I will actually be with her for Mother's Day... I can't show up empty handed! So here we go...

1. First off, my family takes lots of vacas and I have all the pictures which I hold hostage basically until the next trip. I decided this year to make a photobook of all the pictures from last year's trip! I don't have a pic of this because I did it online but I recommend this for all mom's!

2. Every since the live flower/snail incident, I've stuck with the fake flowers (they last longer  Wink). This year I did some felted ones.

It is a pattern from PickUpSticks that i got at a LYS.

3. My mom is completely infatuated with Josh Groban ever since seeing him in concert. She has all the CDs/DVDs so I thought she'd get a kick out of this t-shirt I stenciled!

T-shirt on the left, stencil on the right. I doubt she'll wear it to the mall but maybe as a bed shirt. (ps thanks to all the craftster tutes on stenciling!)

Ok so that's it... more info on the blogs below. I hope this inspires someone to make something for their mom!

eek RM, tornadoes?? I can just see myself now hauling my 3 bins of yarn into the bathroom for cover.

Well GatsbyGirl had asked that I post pics of the apron I sent to her (somewhere much earlier in this thread). I finally got my camera back for my bf so here's a few:

Close up of fabric:

I was so sad, I went back to get more fabric for me and they had no more!

ooh hoxierice, great apron! I would totally wear that as a dress... well if it had a back that is.  Wink

I received from GatsbyGirl yesterday! I don't have any action shots since I'm home alone but perhaps later. Here it is, my fab apron!

Modeled by my chair:

With it on, it feels so pretty like a summer skirt!

Close up of the embroidery! I love it! Reminds me of Hawaii.

Thank you so much GatsyGirl! I'm still chugging away on yours!
