6861  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Design a Dream Wallet Swap Gallery on: March 27, 2006 06:24:11 PM
Thanks guys Cheesy  I'm really glad that luciabug likes her wallet Smiley

The wallet is a one-of...and I forgot to draft a pattern when I made it.  It took me 2 tries to get things right (you don't wanna see the first one Tongue)!
6862  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: Ongoing Fabric Fat Quarter Swap? on: March 27, 2006 12:49:43 PM
Im back from my weekend getawayand I cant believe Ive missed out on the interesting discussions about this topic Tongue

I love the idea but does it have to be fat quarters? I NEED more than that for most of my projects. Can it be two fq's or 1 half yard? Can we post less, like 5 or 6? Sorry, I know I'm a pain sometimes.  Wink

Claiming either two FQs or a half yard piece would work for me!

I would like to keep the post to a minimum of eight selections, be it FQs or half yard pieces.  That way, the swap should move along pretty quickly and not be idled by a lack of choices Smiley

This sounds like a very fun and easy idea!
I know that I have burnt myself out with some big shipping costs to the US in the past few months and I'm thinking the postage on 2 FQ's would turn out very reasonable Smiley

Good idea on letting the topic stew awhile, more people = awesomer ongoing swap.

Yes, thats what I was thinking.  I wanted something funwith reasonable shipping costs.  Think this topic has been sufficiently stewed over? Wink

I like the idea of doing this one with the option of choosing 2 FQs...or a full 1/2 yard piece if the person offering mentions it's available that way. Maybe we could list what we have and just specify the length of each. If we have a 1/2 yard we could just send that or cut it and send a FQ of that fabric and a FQ of another, whichever way it was requested by the person choosing it. I know when I purchase fabric I never buy less than a yard (I'm even purchasing full yards for the swap I'm in...1/2 yard for my partner and the other 1/2 for me). Crap...I AM addicted.  Undecided

To be fair (and to keep things simple, I think the person who is making a claim should not request for a FQ to be cut from a half yard piece.  It would kinda suck if someone was left with a bunch of FQs when she has offered lots of half yard selections to choose from!  Im glad to know that youre having fun with the Fat Quarters or 1/2 Yard Pieces Swap!  In case you didnt figure, Im a fabric junkie too Tongue

I KNOW that you can fit approx. 6 yards of fabric into a flat rate Global Priority envelope (before needing to use tape to keep it shut - which is a no-no!)
Considering that, I would think it would be a real waste to ship one half yard anywhere for $9.50.

When I read what this post was, I don't know why, but I imagined that it would work a little differently....
I thought that everyone would contribute x number of fat quarters.  They would all be sent to the organizer, and the organizer, in return, would ship x number of DIFFERENT fat quarters back to you.
Everyone would have to send money for return postage to the organizer, it could be included with the fat quarters (or half yds, or whatever is decided), and it shouldn't cost anyone more than $10 (probably).

I also thought that each month there would be a theme.  For example, one month everyone should send pink fabric, the next month everyone would send batiks, and the next month they would send novelties.....
of course, you could participate one month, or every month, because the number of fat quarters you get will be determined by how many you send in, not the number of people involved....Does that make sense?

Oh, and to keep things moving, the deadline is the deadline.  Fabric should be received by the organizer by the 25th of each month (or whatever day....this is just for example).  There will be no extentions, not to be mean, but that way if one person flakes, the rest aren't waiting forever to get their fabric.

Just tell me to shut it if I am way off here!

Meghan, I like the idea of themes Smiley  Perhaps we could have a discussion on that for the proposed monthly fabric swaps.

Okay, back to the topic at hand.  I am definitely not willing to organize a swap where Ill have to be responsible for distributing and shipping to all participants!  There are all kinds of potential problems with that (how to fairly distribute the collected fabric stash, having to account for how the funds were spent, etc.).

I proposed an ongoing fabric swap for the following reasons:

1.  I wanted people to have the option of selecting and receiving fabric(s) they really, really like!
2.  I thought itll be nice to send FQs (or in this case, 2 FQs or a half yard piece) to keep shipping costs reasonable.
3.  There seems to be lots of folks who have fabric stashes in their closets and I thought they would like to refresh their stash by trading.

I don't think that would work, what if the organizer flakes, I'm not saying she would, just that it's not a really good idea to do a swap like that just becasue of the things that could go wrong.

And also you wouldn;t get fabric you didn't care for....

Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for adding that you dont think I would flake Wink  Seriously, I would not even entertain the idea of doing a mass swap.  If I did, I would go nuts trying to figure out how to divide up and refund any remaining amounts of money.  Ick!

Now, I have a couple more questions for everyone:

1.  Should there be a restriction on the types of fabrics that may be traded?  Having organized a couple of fabric swaps, Ive noticed that people tend to ask for cotton fabricsand indicate that they would not like to receive fabrics that are difficult to work with (i.e. frays easily, really slick-type fabrics, gauzy fabrics, etc.).  Id love to hear from you, PinkMafiasince youve also organized a fabric swap in the past.

2.  If this swap gets organized, would it be fair to ask everyone to ship out within a week from the day someone has made a claim?

I think it's great knowing that the wallet was created just for you!  My partner, luciabug should receive my wallet any day now...and I'm still anxious about her reaction to the wallet that I tried to create for her.  On the flip side, I can't wait to see what she made for me Cheesy

okay that will work. I really like this idea! When are you going to start the swap!!

I guess that depends on whether there's sufficient interest to get it started in the first place  Undecided  If there isn't enough people particpating in an ongoing swap, the pickings get pretty slim...and the swap will progress really slowly Tongue  I'm gonna let this topic stew over the weekend and see what happens.  If we decide to go for it, I would love to start the swap sometime during the first week of April.
