Ooh, these are all good suggestions. I am especially curious to try a lime cilantro jalapeno variety!

Also, I wanted to add that I just ran across a recipe that included soy sauce. I'll skip the salt when I try it, but the tangyness could be just the flavour I'm after.

* I second the idea of the tortilla espanola, especially since it's a fabulous finger food for a crowd. You can add extra veggies in it too, like red and green peppers, corn, and/or mushrooms to make it extra festive. Cut into small slices or squares, serve with some toothpicks, and you've got a perfect Spanish appetizer.

Another good Spanish tapa would be the Ensaladilla Rusa ("Russian Salad"), which is basically a potato salad with vegetables. Here's an example: http://www.spain-recipes.com/ensaladilla-rusa.html

Vegetable paella is also an option.

* I stayed in Costa Rica for a month, and must admit that gallo pinto, the national dish of beans and rice, was very, VERY common. My host mother fixed it nearly every day, and we even ate it for breakfast. Check out http://www.recipezaar.com/78747 for a recipe.

Buena suerte! Smiley
20  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / (Spicy) Hummus -- What spices do you use? on: December 22, 2007 11:54:32 AM
I recently had a really flavorful, really spicy hummus in a restaurant and have been trying my hand at concocting my own hummus recipes.

I want to hear what kind of spices and other ingredients you clever people use to perk up your hummus!

Here's my latest take on the dish:

I used a can of chickpeas (rinsed and drained), 2/3 cup tahini, 1/4 cup lime juice, juice from 1/2 lemon, 1 tsp chili powder, 2.5 tsp cumin, 1 tsp dried red pepper flakes (mild), 4 crushed garlic cloves, a pinch of garlic salt, and a few roasted red pepper pieces. It was a bit thick, so I thinned it with a little bit of virgin olive oil and the liquid from a jar of olives, then garnished the finished product with dried tomatoes, more pepper flakes, and an olive. Yummy!

Now share your tips, please!
