I too, took  home ech. in jr. high and learned the basics. Although, I did teach myself through much trial and error as well. I would watch my grandmother (who could not read or write,) sew and applique quilts and sew her fashionable outfits. She would and still does measure with long strings. Remarkable! I studied my manual and did alot of research in the in the internet.
