1  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Technical Help for a machine challenged lady. on: January 08, 2007 06:52:08 PM
So, I was given this awesome White Sewing Machine Model No. 742 for my birthday in October and just now I am trying to set it up (I know, I know). It was built inbetween 1975-1977 and the manual is no longer printed. This particular machine used to be my Aunt's mother's and she has since passed and this machine was given without the manual. SO. LONG STORY SHORT.

I threaded the machine according to how I know it to be threaded. I also threaded the bobbin correctly (even read the thread about bobbins before posting this.) My top needle will NOT pick up my bobbin thread...the bobbin moves...but no action through the teeth. Wtf, my friends? Can anyone help me here? I also don't even know how to wind a bobbin on this machine. I feel so helpless. My mom couldn't even figure it out and that lady has been sewing since the 60's.

That's the machine. Any help would make my millenium.

3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / The soon to be Father-in-Law dreaded b-day gift. on: February 03, 2006 10:39:03 AM
My fiancee's father is extremely hard to buy for. he is older (in his 60's), owns a painting business, loves to travel (by car), loves hiking, the outdoors, maps, etc. however, he does not like much material things. we got him an old 1965 leather bound atlas last year and he loved it, but we don't want to do that again.

what do you think? any ideas?
