1  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Sushi Making Tips on: December 17, 2005 07:22:38 PM
My friend jokingly mentioned that he wanted me to make sushi for him for Christmas (which also happens to be his birthday). So I thought, it would be cool to surprise him with some sushi. So far, I'm planning to use the recipe from here: http://maki.typepad.com/justhungry/2003/12/handrolled_sush.html

I'm most likely going to roll the sushi into a cone shape. I'm juss wondering if it just stays in that shape after rolling or if I have to do something to make it stay like that.

How long does sushi last? I'm thinking that I might make it and give it to my friend the next day. Would it still taste okay?

Any other helpful hints? Things I should look out for? Any suggestions as to what fillings to combine together?  I'd appreciate any suggestions as this will be my first time making sushi.
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Xmas Gift for a Artsy Friend on: December 10, 2005 09:16:28 PM
Guys are hard to think of presents for. So I decided to try my most non subtle way of finding out what my friend wanted - directly asking him. Tongue Anyways, when I asked him what he wanted he said...himself. lol So I wanna do him "in a box" by basically putting items that relate to his interests/personality. Though I've only met him this school year and known him for only a few months, he's become a very good guy friend of mine. It's a completely platonic relationship though. =)

So what about him? He's a hilarious guy and uber nice. He's a 17 year old Asian boy who's going to be heading to university/college next September. He is mostly taking arts courses (like photography, visual, media and desktop). He is also Christian and works as a swim instructor. Like most boys I know, he's into electronics and techy stuff. He also likes Snoopy. Chinese music (C-pop) is his favourite type of music. (I can't really burn him a CD or anything though because he uses an mp3 player.) Foodwise, all I know is that I often see him eating an apple in the hallways and he usually has a thermos with tea in it. His favourite colours are blue and white.

So far for the "him in a box" I have:

-sketchbooks (http://www.currys.com/paper/prodinfo3.asp?SubcatID=4135&catID=7)
-a Snoopy keychain that I made
-packs of green tea
-chocolate truffles (because he's so nice and sweet =P)

However, as for the sketchbooks, I'm not sure if I should give him one of them or all four. I was thinking that four might be a bit overboard but I'm not sure as I'm not into the arts. I mean...can you have too many sketchbooks? Huh

Any suggestions, crafty or not, will be greatly appreciated. =)

I'm just curious as to how long your transfers usually last. Are they pretty much permanent? I know it probably depends on what brand and how you wash your shirt but I'd like to make a shirt with a transfer as a gift for a friend and I'd hate for the transfer to come off. Thanks in advance!
