Gallery Link: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=342446.0

Hi there! Welcome to the gypsy swap! Before you go ahead and send me your questionnaire, there are a few things I'd like to tell you before we begin. This swap requires 1 Large, 1 Medium and 2 small crafted items. Please send only items that relate the theme in some way unless they are "extras" to spoil your partner. If you are outside of the USA, I require a scan or legible photo of your receipt or customs form to prove that you have sent if you do not purchase a tracking number. I encourage all participants to post in this thread or send me a PM at least on a weekly basis. This is to let me and your future partner know that you are still actively participating and haven't run away with a gypsy caravan.  Wink

This swap's theme is the mysterious and often misunderstood world of the gypsies. Your crafts can range from costume pieces and exotic jewelery to treasures that look like they were brought from distant lands. Let your creative mind wander as far as the sand dunes to the East and as long as the Silk Road.

13  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Gypsy Swap? on: February 13, 2010 10:19:16 AM
Hey there! How about a Gypsy themed swap?

Crafted items could be anything ranging from folkloric/belly dancing items to costume pieces, fortune telling things, painted tambourines, veils, jewelry or mysterious items that look like they come from distant lands...

Also, there are nomadic peoples hailing from many different countries and ethnic backgrounds that one could use for inspiration. There are the Irish travelers, the Ghawazee of Egypt, the Banjara of India, The Kuchi, Kutch, and Turkoman of the Middle east and Asia and also the well-known Roma. How interesting would it be to craft gypsy things that hail from your partner's country of heritage? Though it doesn't have to limited to just that idea.

I would allow for a longer crafting period and the average 1 large, 1 medium, and two smalls package requirements.

So what do you think?  Wink

14  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / Making a Swap US only, with options? on: January 18, 2010 10:31:53 AM
Ok so I hosted my first swap and it's something that I might want to host as a re-occurring swap.  Smiley

We had a small circle of participants and all but one of them were U.S. and answered NO to international shipping. So I got stuck with shipping to our one international participant, which is fine, but it is a bit tougher on my budget. I'd rather not ship out of country every time I organize because the vast majority of participants do not want to ship out of the country. I'm worried that I'll get stuck with sending internationally every time I organize.

I think most would agree that we'd rather spend that extra cash on craft supplies and crafting without worrying about the weight of what we're making. So there's always the option to make it U.S. participants only, which I'd like to do. But it makes me feel kinda bad to exclude people.

I had an idea, and wondered if anyone else has done anything similar. What if I made it U.S. only, with the option that if you are out of country you could choose to partner up with another person out of the country beforehand, or someone willing to send international to you before signing up? Then the two of them could sign up already having their partner and could still participate in a swap limited to the US? I really hope that makes sense. I guess another way to say that is: International swappers must choose their partner before signing up? That way it's not completely limited, and maybe they can find each other through the swap thread and sign up together.

Any thoughts?  Huh

16  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Completed Projects / Arabian Nights Bedroom: a belly dancer's boudoir on: December 30, 2009 08:45:44 PM
Ok, So I had this painfully plain bedroom...pale pink walls, old dusty blue carpet, white trim, square windows...just painfully, painfully, plain. I belly dance, play middle eastern drum, and involve myself in all things crafty...so it was time for a change! I had a few influences...belly dance, an old 1949 illustrated copy of the 1001 Arabian Nights, and...I'm a bit red in the face to admit...but...the packaging that some Kama Sutra brand intimate products came in. So! All of those inspirations led to the boudoir-harem fantasy mayhem in this pictures. I was going for the tacky-gypsy-hookah lounge look, so any clashing is purely purposeful. I will defend my curtains though, they look yellow in the pictures, but they are gold Thai silk and the flash made them look too bright. They are much darker in person.
On with the pics!

I painted the walls this wine color. In the daylight it looks more purple, with my lamps on it looks more red. The gold design over the windows came from a design that was painted on a Partylite votive holder my aunt gave me. The majority of the bedding came from the Artesia line at JCPenny, but the curtains are my handy work.  Cheesy The little gold shelf by the bed holds some of those Kama Sutra massage oils I mentioned earlier. Hey, it is a boudoir after all!

Ever watch I Dream of Jeannie when they show the inside of her bottle? She had so many cushions! I have 14 cushions in this room alone. I'll probably end up adding more someday.  Cheesy

A corner where I can drum, put on some make-up or enjoy some aroma therapy candles. I also have candle sconces on the walls. This little cabinet thingie I painted white and then took a henna stencil and applied henna with cosmetic gold dust to stain a pretty design on its surfaces. That was a trying project...but definitely worth it! I did the same to my dresser.

My dressing/dance corner. I put some of my belly dance gear here, and in the trunk that the cushions are on. Oh yeah, I made those too.  Wink

I made these with vintage drapery fabric that was my grandmas.

Does your bedroom overlook the sun swept deserts of Rājasthān? Thanks to some acrylic paint...mine does!  Wink
The moon and stars glow in the dark. I used a star map so the constellations are as correct as I could paint them. I'm a nerd.  Tongue

I did a lot of this antiquing finish to all the candle sconces and this wrought iron garden table with some gold acrylic paint.

And the next project is...the bathroom! Someday... Tongue

Thanks for looking Smiley

REMEMBER - the item requirement is slightly smaller due to the holidays, unless you and your partner want to do more:

1 large and two smalls  -or-  1 large and 1 medium

and you'll get a whopping 7 weeks to do it in, with send outs over a week from Jan 1st.

INPORTANT NOTE - I do want at least one post in the swap thread or a PM (CC'ed to me and your partner) a week to let us know you haven't been run over by a reindeer.

NOTE TO POTENTIAL SWAPPERS! - My intention is to make this swap very stress free! Isn't it nice to sit by the fire and craft on a cool winter's night? (And I say "cool" because I live in FL, hehe) I understand that a few of you are concerned about the holiday hustle and bustle. I am open to the idea of extending send-outs if need be, but hopefully we won't need to. So we'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it. I understand that not everyone has a winter break, PTO, or vacation days over the holiday so I want to make sure we can still welcome those people and work with their schedules and needs.

19  CLOTHING / Costumes: Discussion and Questions / How do Gypsies Carry Stuff? on: September 25, 2009 12:54:08 PM
Hey there,
I'm having some gypsy garbing issues with carrying stuff around at the Renaissance faire. I have 2 small pouches that I attach to my belt. But by small I mean slightly larger than the average camera case. They are small because if I dance with anything larger they flop around (and that's always attractive) or could fall off. With a big 25 yard gypsy spinning skirt + coin belt, scarfs and attached jewelry bits my waist is already pretty well weighed down by stuff. Only Issue is, if I buy something or want to carry favors to give people or whatever--I have to carry an additional purse around my shoulder, which I either have to put down to dance or play a game, make my boyfriend begrudgingly carry, or worry about it swinging around and hitting someone during a barrel turn! (wouldn't want that, despite my ditzy character. rofl)

Anyway, I was trying to devise a way to carry an additional bag, but not have it on my waist or shoulder. I was thinking about maybe making a small backpack purse, but I was wondering if there would be a more accurate or simply a better way to carry things while not limiting movement. Any links or pattern recommendations would be helpful too!

Thanks in advance for any helpful ideas,
-A Gypsy that Feels Like a Bag Lady

*Be sure to REMOVE Crosswind (or cross her out) from your list on the thread because she is not participating in this swap.
*Be sure to ADD Jenna_Gayle to the list, she was a last minute addition (Welcome Jenna! Smiley)
*ALWAYS remember to cross members off on your list as you receive cards from them. This is how I can keep track of everyone's progress--and yours too! Everyone's lives are busy, but I ask that you cross them out within a few days of receiving the card. Just in case- this is done by going to your Quickie Questionnaire in the card thread, clicking "modify", highlighting that person's name and clicking on the slash button next to the underline button.
*ALWAYS post pictures of the cards you receive. You can post them as you get them or wait until you get several of them together to post pics. Remember that anything is better than nothing at all, if you don't have a camera, cell phones and webcams work too! and you can always hit "reply all" and ask us to take pics of your card before we send it to you.
* CHIT-CHAT! Feel free to post in the thread and get to know your fellow swappers. :-)

Blessed Be!
