1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: HP Craftalong ~Fall Semester 2012~ *Join At Any Time* on: September 11, 2012 01:04:42 PM
OWL Subject & Option(if available): Muggle Studies
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Fairytale Chess
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, materials using, plan of action, expected timeline, etc.) Taking inspiration from a combination of Disney and Grimm's, I am going to make a chess set using paper mache techniques. The board will be cardboard from a soda box and I'll use newspaper strips to cover it and give it a bit more structure. The pieces will be paper mache figures and i plan on trying to add as much detail as possible for each piece, supplementing what can't be done in paper mache with other craft supplies. I will paint everything and use paper pulp to smooth out bumps and creases. A paper mache spell book will aid me on this venture as it's my first time in a very long while that I've worked with these techniques. The bases will be white and black.

Tentatively the white pieces will be

Pawns: genie lamp, red riding hood, glass slipper, book, white bird, pumpkin, fairy godmother
Castles: Rapunzel's Tower
Bishops: Doc and Dopey
Knights: Prince Philip and the Beast
King: King Triton
Queen: Queen Athena

and the black pieces will be

Pawns: poison apple, seashell, spindle/spinning wheel, magic mirror, gingerbread house, Queen of Hearts, a hook, queen of hearts
Castles: Cinderella's stepsisters
Bishops: Jafar and Gaston
Knights: Wolf and Maleficent
King: Ursula wearing Triton's crown
Queen: Evil Queen (Snow White)

some of the pieces may change these were my first brainstorm.

Challenge: Divination
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Butterfly Bracelet
Brief Description: It took me awhile to find an omen that represented something good to me (or at least an omen that inspired me). And then I stumbled across an excerpt talking about how butterflies were considered to be signs of good luck/fortune. I knew this had to be my inspiration because it said the ancient Greek for butterfly was Psyche(a name I used in Latin back in HS).

Butterflies stand for freedom, change, and major transformation. For me, I'm desperately in need of something that reminds me that when the other shoe drops it might not always be a bad thing. So I created a bracelet with a butterfly charm to symbolize that.

(Apologies for the darkness of the photo)

Challenge: Arithmancy
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Fibonacci Earrings
Brief Description: I created some earrings with jump rings and seed beads following the fibonacci sequence, starting at one and ending at 8.

Challenge: Herbology
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Secret Keeper
Brief Description: Initially I was going to make a rowan wand, but the bowtruckle in the tree didn't like me taking a branch so I made something representing the rowan by using its characteristics. I used an old box I had because the rowan symbolizes protection. The white is from the rowan's flowers which symbolize cleansing and safekeeping. The red recalls the color of its berries. The star inside the lid is representative of the star that resides at the base of each berry another protective symbol. The box was initially yellow and I kept the inside that color instead of covering it to represent inspiration, a lesser recognized symbolism of the rowan.

Challenge: Quidditch - Cheering/Spirit
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Mini Ravenclaw Quidditch Pennants and Seeker sign
Brief Description: These are going to hang behind my mini broomstick coat rack. I guess eventually I'll have a mini Ravenclaw locker room or mini Wizard/Witch bedroom before long.

Challenge: Quidditch - Chaser
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Beaded Fan Pull
Brief Description: It took me awhile to come up with a project for this challenge. Looking around my room I couldn't help but notice the tiny little pull on my fan. It worked great for the light over my desk in college, but now it's a bit small. I had some beads I didnt know what to do with because they were too big for jewelry but they were perfect for this. I added some smaller beads from my broken jewelry collection in because it would have looked too plain and here's the result.

Challenge: Quidditch - Seeker
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Snitch Catch-All
Brief Description: I couldn't let the other pieces of the soda bottle I made the cuff out of go unused so I turned the bottom into a Snitch by adding some wings and using the witchery of permanent markers to turn the plastic yellow. I'm planning on using it as a catch-all for small items like coins and odds and ends that come out of my pockets and purse.

Class: Quidditch Cup Beater Challenge
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Recycled Plastic Bottle Cuff
Project Page Link:
Brief Description: As far as jewelry goes, I usually don't use recycled materials because it never seemed like I could make it look nice. Ditto using felt (it always ended up bunchy). So for this challenge, I decided to tackle a cuff made of a recycled plastic bottle and covered in felt. I attached a potato chip bag flower(another first-I save these for crafting but end up throwing them out) and threaded a bead into its center. The staples were a make it work moment when I couldn't find my craft glue. I'm quite proud of the result.

Class: Quidditch Cup Broomstick Challenge
House: Ravenclaw
Project Name: Mini Quidditch Coat Rack
Project Page Link:
Brief Description: A Reducio charm and some wire hooks has my broom doing double duty as a place for Quidditch uniforms, scarves, and a place to store my Quaffle, Bludgers, and Snitch. A stasis spell ensures they don't get away.

Hopefully I'm not too late for this. Meant to post yesterday.

Class (or House Pride Item): Portkey
House: (if desired): Ravenclaw
Project Name: No Stress Travel Collage Portkey
Project Page Link:
Brief Description: After a stressful day I like doing quick crafts to help unwind with whatever I have readily available. Since a good Portkey is usually something we want Muggle to ignore, I focused on using clothing tags as well as some buttons laying around. The tree was a just because I felt the need to add something new addition. I'm going back and covering it up so only the bottle cap is visible so Muggles don't pick it up because it's pretty.

7  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Language Learners Swap. S/up 11 May until 25 May. Send outs 15 June on: May 22, 2009 08:35:25 PM
Oooh, this swap is tempting.

I'm the random one person who can actually speak Latin; I also know some German and French. I could cobble together some hieroglyphics and Ancient Greek and maybe a little Spanish.

Definitely will follow this one at the very least, and sign up round 2.
8  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: Nanowrimo Swap? on: October 09, 2008 08:45:48 PM
I like that idea...cuz iknow after nano is finished I like to take December to edit (or finish) the novel i worked on in November and usually by then the writing adrenaline's gone.

I'd be in for this. A little way to shut my FMC up so I don't cheat and start typing early...she desperately wants to start moving.

Posting what I sent asumamori since she's busy getting her computer back up and running.

First off some bookmarks, it's my belief you can never have too many Smiley

the back ofthe lion/lamb one

some armwarmers that have Twilight/apple patches

A red crochet bag with a Team Switzerland patch

My favorite piece that I made was a WIP bag with one side that has all things Edward and the other all things Jacob...you may not be able to tell from the pic but the fabric making the Edward side of the bag is a shimmery denim (I thought it fitting Smiley)

All the patches I made are removable since asumamori is a fellow Team Switzerlander, if she ever changes sides she's not stuck.
