2  Flight of the Bumblebee! in Crochet: Completed Projects by Lydia the Strange on: January 18, 2011 09:57:53 AM
I've been on a crocheting rampage! I bought tons of yarn yesterday. Yarn shopping is so much fun. My daughter has been asking me to make her some new hats, so this is the second one I made for her.

I crocheted a simple beanie in yellow and black stripes. Then I added earflaps in white for the "wings" of the bumblebee. I then crocheted around some pipecleaners for the antenae and sewed them onto the hat. I'm still deciding if I want to add a stinger or not.

comments/criticism/tips are all welcome!

3  desert blue legwarmers in Crochet: Completed Projects by Lydia the Strange on: December 27, 2010 05:15:16 AM
This project took me about 2 days to complete. I used a little less than 4 skeins of yarn in desert blue. This is the first crochet project I have completed in a while because I have such horrible arthritis in my hands that I cannot crochet for very long any more.

The leg warmers actually go a few inches above the knee and can be scrunched down. There are ribbed cuffs on both ends.

My package from Ficklepegasus arrived yesterday! She made me the most awesome of things!

Drive-In Movie Day: I got this wonderful crocheted popcorn garland and a little popcorn amigurumi, as well as 4 popcorn containers!

National Go Barefoot Day: I got a pair of crocheted barefoot sandals! Love them!

Great Outdoors Month: I got a crocheted water bottle holder (LOVE IT!) and a grow your own tree kit, which is perfect since I just bought a house.

What an awesome swap partner you are! I hope you like what I sent you.

5  No Sew Tote Bag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by Lydia the Strange on: November 30, 2009 09:05:57 AM
Thanks to Scoochmaroo over at Instructables http://www.instructables.com/id/Duct-Tape-No-Sew-Tote/ I was able to make this fabulous tote bag.

I picked out this great fabric this morning and found a matching duct tape to line it with.

Here is my action shot. It holds perfectly my water bottle, book, wallet, cellphone and keys. I think it would also be great as a lunch bag.

6  My twist on the lacy bouquet afghan in Crochet: Completed Projects by Lydia the Strange on: May 05, 2009 10:42:35 PM
I have had this afghan magazine for many years now and have never made any of the patterns. They are all really beautiful, especially one titled Lacy Bouquet. The lady my mother works for is having a baby girl and she has chosen the colors raspberry, lime, yellow and white for her nursery. I decided that I would try out the Lacy Bouquet pattern only change it up to make it a baby blanket.

7  The Safety Dance by Men without hats 1982 in CHALLENGE 36 ENTRIES by Lydia the Strange on: March 02, 2009 02:11:51 PM
S-s-s-s A-a-a-a F-f-f-f E-e-e-e T-t-t-t Y-y-y-y
Safe, dance!

[Spoken]
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
And we can dance

[Sung]
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
And we can dance
Dance!

We can go when we want to
The night is young and so am I
And we can dress real neat from our hats to our feet
And surprise 'em with the victory cry
Say, we can act if want to
If we don't nobody will
And you can act real rude and totally removed
And I can act like an imbecile

[Refrain]
I say, we can dance, we can dance
Everything out of control
We can dance, we can dance
We're doing it from wall to wall
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody look at your hands
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody takin' the cha-a-a-ance

Safety dance
Is it safe to dance
Is it safe to dance

S-s-s-s A-a-a-a F-f-f-f E-e-e-e T-t-t-t Y-y-y-y
Safe, dance!

We can dance if we want to
We've got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it, never gonna lose it
Everything'll work out right
I say, we can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine

[Refrain]

Is it safe to dance, oh is it safe to dance [6x]
Is it safe to dance

Here is the story behind my entry.

I work at Costco partime as front end assistant, comp shopper and lot girl. For SAFETY reasons, they have the lot crew wear these hideous orange, black and yellow netted safety vests. Now I didn't mind wearing them when our warehouse orignally opened, because they were brand new, but eventually many people had worn them (NO WE DID NOT GET OUR OWN) and they smelled of horrible B.O and had never been washed. After a while I refused to wear one all together.

Eventually, us girls ( who are mainly on the lot, because well, girls do everything better anyway) decided that we needed to get pretty vests that sparkled and shined and embroider our names on them. We always talked and talked but never did anything about it..... UNTIL NOW.

I saw this craft challenge and immediately "Safety Dance" popped into my head and being that as much as I love artsy entries and always want to make one, but never do because I am more practical, I thought our safety vests would be perfect!

I finished the first one today. I have 4 more to make. All different colors of the rainbow! NO BOYS ALLOWED! WE are officially calling ourselves the LOT GIRLS!

I took my old safety vest that I purchased for myself apart to use for a pattern. I found this incredible sale at Joann Fabrics where I purchased a yard and a half of each color for $1.79 and found some ultra cool reflective tape and then just regular old bias tape to match the reflective tape. I purchased some embroidery floss and off I go......

Here is a picture of the vest right after I ironed on the reflective tape  and sewed the three pieces together.

Here is the vest after I sewed on the matching binding. It's Purple and Yellow if you cannot tell by the pictures.

Here is my very first go at hand emroidering: I basically printed out the size of the name I wanted on the computer, cut it down and used fabric glue to hold it to the fabric, and embroidered over the letters. It was the best way I knew how so it looked straight and came out nice.

Here is the back all finished:

Here is a close up of the back:

One down Four more to go...... I know this entry isn't as oooh and ahhhh as some of these other entries, but I am very proud of my hand embroidery and of how well this safety vest turned out. I think people will see us for miles! No one will get run over by crazy members now! And once in a while we can be seen dancing in the lot, while pushing carts!

8  Oscar Party (NOW WITH PICTURES) in Party Planning by Lydia the Strange on: February 14, 2009 09:53:08 AM
Every year I throw an Oscar party. I love the Oscars! This year will be my biggest party yet. I have 40 people so far the have RSVP'd and it is going to be so much fun!

Here are just a few things I am doing this year for the party.

Oscar Bingo: I've made and printed out "bingo" cards that have Oscar related things instead of numbers. The cards have things like, music cuts off speech, presenter puts on glasses to read teleprompter, nominee trips coming up stairs... When you get a "bingo" you shout OSCAR!

Pin the Oscar on the actor: My friend came up with this idea. She printed out two large posters of Kate Winslett and Heith Ledger and a smaller picture of an Oscar. Same idea as pin the tail on the donkey.

Movie quote challenge: We printed out a ton of movie quotes from all different types of movies and put them in a jar and pass it around. People have to try and guess the movie and who said it.

Movie soundtrack game: Same idea as movie quotes, only you have to guess what movie the song came from.

Guess who: When guests arrive, they are given an actor/actress to wear on their back (just small picture) and they are not allowed to know who it is. They have to figure it out by asking other guests yes/no questions to try and figure it out.

I bought two pinatas (one shaped like a movie camera and the other like a slate). We are giving away prizes like movie theater tickets, itunes gift card and little oscar statues for games.

Our clubhouse where we had the party. Pin the Oscar on teh actor posters and swag bag area.

Close up!

Swag bag table with cds, candy, toys, awards!

Alrighty ladies, here is a pair of slippers that I have been working on the past few days. I have to rest my hands quite often (arthritis) so it is taking me much longer, but hey, I got one slipper done. This pair is for a friend of mine at work. I am actually making her two pairs.
