1  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / What to do with a wicker mannequin? on: August 15, 2005 09:12:40 AM
A fellow at work made me take home a mannequin. I'm currently calling her mannie and she lives in the backseat of my car. But that's lame, and she needs to become a useful and productive member of society. Or rather, a cool piece of decor for the new apartment.

I have posted pictures, she is hollow and quite light. I am thinking I might like to make her more sturdy, then put a light weight potted plant in her head. Any ideas on how to make her more sturdy? (she's a bit iffy on the standing up, as well)

Also, any other cool ideas on what to do with her so she actually performs a function. I'd like for her to remain her original color and texture, because I think the natural wicker is lovely.
2  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / How to.. ? on: July 23, 2005 01:09:58 PM
Can anyone help me find a pattern for something similar to this, or help me figure out how to make something like it?
It is from an Anthropologie catalogue, and I thought it was cute but overpriced (of course). Even just a pattern for the big flowers, and I could probably figure out the cord + leaves.
I'd love any feedback!

p.s. - Can anyone recommend good places to get free crochet patterns?
3  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Collaged art boxes (6 images) on: July 18, 2005 10:02:54 PM
I cannot stand the word decoupage, cannotnotnot.  So these are my collaged boxes! I made several, so this is a multi project topic. I didn't want to overload on pictures, so here are just a few.
If anyone is interested, I have attempted to sell them, but am quite attached, so I would ask $50 for either. I am still interested in selling, or perhaps a cool trade.

Anyway, let me know what you think, or if I should post pictures of the other, smaller ones. Or any cool ideas for themes for later boxes!

This is my Art Lady box. I thought it would be a great jewelry box for a woman who likes art. Featuring pictures of art fems. The bottom is lined with rose petals, which was much fun.

This one began with a very nice box, but it had quite the nasty fake velvet lining. I was creeped out by the rusted pin I found in the depths of the lining. Perhaps I should add a picture of the new inside. No lining, just pictures.

4  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / New Apartment decor ideas on: July 18, 2005 11:13:06 AM

Woohoo! Just signed the lease for my first apartment!

It will be unfurnished, so I will have to get together with my future room mate to scrounge up furniture. My parents have offered me their couch (ugly, cat-scratched and faded green gingham thing) , which I would want to get a slip cover for.
Question the 1st: What can I do to spice up a couch slip cover? I was thinking tye dye, but I don't really want to have a blazing, polyphonic, multi-color couch. I have also been experimenting with stencils lately, but that would be a real pain to create stencils for a whole couch.  Anyone have project ideas for cool dying techniches, or other ways of decorating a slip cover?

Question number 2:
I want to make a blackboard, to write messages on, but I want it to be cool and funky. Some time ago at a hokey art/craft store I saw these ceramic animals with huge bellies that had blackboard paint on them, with chalk to write on the bellies. These were clever, but over the top, and sort of granny-ish.  I'm trying to think of other sculptural type objects that could be painted with blackboard paint and used as a message board. Something fun, but it need to be sturdy enough to stand freely, firm enough to be able to write on.
I saw some fake halloween pumpkins, and thought that would be good, but only for halloween time, not year round. I was also thinking maybe a wooden jewelry box or cabinet, so it could be hung on the wall near the door, but that's not too creative either.

I would love to get suggestions on either project! Thanks!
