I want to do a paint chip mosaic on wood that has a coat of white paint on it. Here's my WIP first try:

This one is kind of free form, so I didn't need any sort of template or pattern, but I'd like to try a design or picture that would require me to draw on the white surface before placing my paint chip pieces. But I don't want to be able to see the drawing in the "grout" (which is just the background white paint) when I'm done. I'm using mod podge for my glue and over the top of it.
So far I tried iron on transfer pencil, which didn't work at all, very pink and bold under the mod podge; pencil, which also showed through; and one of those blue pens the wash out of fabric with just a spritz of water, which washed right off with the mod podge. If I can't figure anything else out, I may just use the blue pen and very carefully glue each piece in along the lines instead of what I usually do, which is to paint the surface with the mod podge and then stick the pieces onto it. But I'm afraid that I couldn't do a very intricate design that way.
