Thanks, ladies, for all your kind praise.
Claypeanut--I agree; pastels get boring. I would recommend that you do at least a good practice swatch of a simpler cable if you haven't cabled before. It's pretty easy once you get the concept, as long as you're comfortable reading a chart. I hadn't used a chart before, but had done some other simple cables, and I found it quite doable. However, there were several incidents of crankiness during knittus interruptus. I recommend using a post-it to mark your place in the chart until you have the pattern firmly imprinted on your brain. Happy stitching!
The other comment I would add now that I've given the sweater away is that the sizing seems suspect to me. I went to the baby shower yesterday and saw all of these giant 6 mos. size onesies and thought, oh shoot, there's no way this little sweater can be 12 mos. size. And since I don't have any kids of my own I didn't have a good sense of how big it ought to be. I'd go do some scouting around and measure some commercial garments for comparison and double check the gauge and recommended measurements if you're interested in making this and you're at all concerned about the sizing. Of course, I figure one way or the other the baby will be the right size for it at some time, so it's not that big a deal ultimately.
The other thing I learned is no shell buttons if you want to be able to machine wash the thing. My clever other half caught that mistake after I'd bought first set of buttons, so we went back for some plastic ones. Probably you all know this already, but if it saves someone else a trip, it's worth mentioning.

I can't wait to see yours,
Crumpet. What yarn/color are you using?
