871  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Stitch And BOTCH / My first attempt at knitting something other than a scarf.... on: August 04, 2005 06:52:38 PM
For awhile, I was quite content to knit scarves and dish cloths (in other words, squares and rectangles). Then I discovered Stitch 'n' Bitch and was so excited to knit a hat with kitty ears on it! I really had no idea how to read a pattern, and hat never even knitted in the round before, so I got through the beginning part just fine, then completely misunderstood the instructions and went from knitting the first 2 inches of the hat to decreasing. I left out the whole middle of the hat!!!! I pretty much had a knitted yarmulke. I went ahead and finished it, it was good practice for decreasing, and I still have it. My mom and aunt got a good laugh at it, and so did I once I got over feeling like a complete arse!!! Roll Eyes

I wasn't too discouraged, and went on to knit a half dozen kitty and devil hats (and one based on that pattern that looks like an old pilot's helmet with goggles) that turned out just fine! Wink

Actually, the fuzziness is pretty much the problem. I'm having visions of it all curling up and melting onto the sweater, and I love the sweater too much to risk it! The fuzz has also made my attempts to use any kind of transfer paper into a complete waste of time. I trace and trace, lift up the paper, and there's not one line there.

Maybe I could shave it. Tongue   

         (just kidding)

I've tried that, but I've had trouble keeping the tissue paper in place - when I pin it on the pins rip through it and it shifts. Same with basting it on. Do you think a water soluble glue would work, and then I could wash it off afterwards??

I've got a bit of an embroidery pickle here! I've got a cute red sweater that's just crying out for some Sublime sugar skulls, but it's acrylic, so ironing on the transfer is out, and it's kind of a fuzzy texture, so the white transfer paper I have now barely makes a mark on it. I would love to hear any suggestions on how to get a design onto it!!!
