861  HOME SWEET HOME / Pet-Related Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Re: Homemade Insect Repellant for Pets on: August 10, 2005 05:32:13 PM
I've got a book that says to mix 1/4 tsp of eucalyptus or wintergreen essential oil with 1 cup of water and spray it on (it just says it repells "pests").

I hope that helps!

864  CLOTHING / Shoes: Discussion and Questions / Re: Is there any hope for these shoes? on: August 08, 2005 12:28:04 AM
I think it would be cool to make these look like saddle shoes (in other words, just put some black "panels" in the middle). If paint wouldn't work, you could try gluing on some felt or vinyl, or some other fabric (vinyl would be good, 'cause it wouldn't unravel, and it would be durable)

But then, not everyone loves saddle shoes as much as I do! lol Smiley
865  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re: hair scarfs on: August 07, 2005 11:29:16 PM
I've made a few that are more hairbands than bandanas, I guess. Cut a piece of fabric that is long enough to fit around your head, then cut it so that it's  wider in the middle & tapers at the ends. Tie or pin it around your head, right side down, and mark where to put darts to make it fit smoothly around your head: one in the middle, and one behind each ear works well. Sew in the darts and finish the edges, either by hemming or with bias tape or ribbon. I like to make 2 out of different fabrics and sew them together to make 1 reversible hairband. Then, you can put some velcro or a snap on the ends to attach them, or leave the ends long enough to tie.
I hope that's clear, and that it helps!  Smiley

I love the parrot idea! Hilarious! Cheesy
If the shirt's big enough, you could put elastic on the sleeves and a drawstring in the neck to give it a ruffly, gathered "peasanty" look. Kinda girly/romantic pirate.
867  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Re: Making peppermint lip balm question on: August 07, 2005 10:09:27 PM
The recipe I have calls for 8 drops peppermint essential oil per 2 tablespoons petroleum jelly (and 1/4 teaspoon of lipstick).
The only thing I use on my lips anymore is Webber's Vitamine E Ointment, and they've never been so soft! Smiley
It has a consistency that's really similar to petroleum jelly, so it should melt in a similar way, but it's not petroleum based. (I discovered it when my tattooist recommended it for when my tats were healing, and now I would bathe in it if I could!)
