thanks for all the warm fuzzies...

thingwraith...for the flap pocket I used a variation of this tutorial:
http://www.savvyseams.com/techniques/pipedpocket.php
(savvyseams also has a really great pattern for a "choose your own adventure bag" which is a messenger bag, and even if you don't use her pattern, the step by step is great for making any bag.)

sewpixie also has a tutorial on craftster that has very similar directions, which i plan to try next time i'm in need of such a pocket:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=11808.0

WARNING though: it took me a couple false starts to figure the pocket out...so practice with some scrap fabric till you get the hang of it (unless you're more spacially aware than i am!)

So...long time lurker finally shows off her kitty messenger bag.  Much thanks to all of you who provided me with inspiration, tutorials, and all kinds of good karma in the process...  This bag has a little pocket on the top flap and a simple inside pocket and was made with $2/yard fabric from the store down the street from my office.

Full on messenger bag

Nice work!  The bag is beautiful--and I love that the zipper pocket lining is of the same material as the outside of the bag!

thanks brubendall!  My friends with babies keep saying that diaper bags don't actually need to be waterproof, and now i'm thinking that the changing pad probably doesn't need to be either...

but Ezri_B--iron-on vinyl? tell me more!

LOVE LOVE LOVE your diaper bags. I've been making some myself lately (lots of babies coming at work) and have fancied a messenger type bag for easy arms free access to the world.  However, your backpacks bags look just like Petunia Pickle Bottoms!  They're amazing and so inspiring.

One question: how do you make your changing pads--as in, what layers are included?  I had an unfortunate experience using a shower curtain liner as the waterproof bottom layer this weekend, and now am stumped.  Any hints? Thanks!
